....Medical Terminology prior to Nursing School?? I have 3 more courses to take before I can apply and then I'm off for a year. I was thinking of taking an online Medical Terminology class to fill in the time space and I thought it would be beneficial to me. It is not a requirement for our nursing program.
I'm just curious of those who had to take it for the program, (or chose to take it on your own), if you thought it was beneficial for you, and those who didn't take it... do you wish you would have???
I start nursing school Summer 2007 (BSN program) so I decided to take a medical terminology class this semester. I am definitely glad I decided to! It is a 3 credit class and our professor goes quite indepth. She expects us to know quite a bit -- and we are even reviewing anatomy & physiology. It has definitely beeen extremely beneficial so far.
Aside from my medical terminology class, I am also finishing up an online medical transcription course which definitely helps. I decided to do the med. transcription course because I decided doing at-home medical transcription work during nursing school would be far more conducent with nursing school, rather than working some random job.
My 3 semester hour Medical Terminology course cost about $900, including tuition, textbook, and Taber's Dictionary (used, but like new). Tuition is higher than average in Ohio. I could have taken it online at the same price, but I like the interaction with my teacher and fellow students. There was a lot of anatomy and physiology included.
I am not in the healthcare field. This course opened up an entire new world for me. Imagine living in a country where you can not speak the language. Now, imagine being able to speak their language. This is the difference between not knowing, and now knowing, medical terminology.
I admire those of you who are able to learn a subject outside of the classroom, but I need the discipline imposed by deadlines and grades.

Medical terminology is not required for my program, however, I am taking an online med term class this summer and an advanced med term class in the fall. I believe these classes will help me thats why I am taking them.

I dont understand why Med Term isnt a required class for all nursing courses. It doesnt make sense to not have taken it at all. (If youre not already in the healthcare field, that is)
The program that I'm in did not require med terminology, however I took a course anyway. I found it very beneficial, and it ended up helping me when it came to the exams. I would strongly suggest taking one, unless you have hospital experience.
I didn't but I wish I had. The girl I study with did and she can always figure out the answer by using that darn medical terminology (even if she has no idea what the answer is!)
Im taking med term this summer although its not required for my program. However I had a meeting with the nursing program chair and she told me that if I had the time it would be a tremendous help once I started nursing courses in the fall. I agree with other posters as well so far its been a good review of anatomy too.
Med term is not required for my school. The summer before I applied to nursing school I checked out a current med term book from the library and studied on my own. I actually made note cards and carried them around with me. I have heard that the class is just memorizing. I think you should save your money and study on your own.
I did not take a med terminology class and I did fine without one....can anyone give a brief description of what is covered in such a class? I mean, I know it seems obvious, but Im just curious...is it a lot of memorizing terminology?
