Nursing student taking drugs

Nursing Students General Students

Published

What would you do if you found out that a fellow nursing student is smoking marijuana?

I have been contributing to the blogs on AN.

I finally figured out what a nurse is.

A nurse is a liberal, who believes that it is ok to go to work after smoking pot, who believes that if you are a Christian then you are evil. The nurse also believes that American must socialize the entire health care industry. The nurse also believes that if you did not vote Obama, then you are evil, racists and full of hate. A nurse hates the hospital administration, that offered them their job in the first place. The nurse believes that only charity can come from the state, to be charitable as an individual is a waste of time.

Thats an unfair, over-generalization meant solely to provoke people, and you know it.

Also, no one here has even once insinuated that it is OK for a nurse to smoke pot before work. Every single person here who voices support or indifference toward nurses who choose to smoke state that they don't care what a nurse does after work or on their days off. No one here has claimed that it is somehow OK for a nurse to go to work while high.

Thats not fair. Nader made some compelling arguments.

Considering that legally prescribed drugs kill 300% more Americans than illegal drugs combined : http://rinf.com/alt-news/business-news/prescription-drugs-kill-300-percent-more-americans-than-illegal-drugs/4837/

and marijuana has killed ZERO, a student nurse smoking a joint is the least of the medical establishment's worries....

Would I want a high nurse as my caretaker, no, then again, I don't want one that's hungover from the previous night's alcohol binge either...after dating a few nurses that drank, that's more of a concern than a STUDENT nurse engaging in a relatively harmless substance.

Cannabis was a prescribed drug, here is a link to some medical history:

The origin of this thread reminded me of "Reefer Madness", for the record, no, I don't use marijuana, however I do support the use of medicines that (not withstanding the political hogwash and outright lies by the establishment's findings) are useful to patients and have no negative side effects. Then again, where would big pharma be if people could grow their own pharmacy in the windowsill of their kitchens?

I agree...this isn't the time for rumors.

This is going to be a very politically unpopular view, but if I was the type of person that did MJ (which I am not)..smoking on Saturday isn't going to affect my patient care if I had clinicals, let's say, on a Tuesday. You are technically, not "under the influence" just b/c you can't pass a drug test.

That is why you should not say anything unless you have personally SEEN this student smoking before or during clinicals or smelled it on their clothes when they come in.

Say nothing. The drug test that they will have to take before getting that first nursing job will take care of itself.

mind your own business

I would never put myself in a position to see "for a fact" that someone was smoking pot. Although I don't agree that it should be illegal any more or less than cigarettes, I value my freedom too much to risk it. I don't like smoke of any kind anyways, so I would not want to pollute my lungs with it even with a contact high.

If you saw it, you probably should not even legally be there. If you just heard about it, then you should probably just mind your own business and let people hang themselves if they so choose.

exactly. focus on yourself in school.

if this person is coming to clinical saying "wooohoo i'm high" and then proceeds to pull out a bag of pot, then i would personally say something. if you heard that this person went to a party and had smoked a joint last weekend, then mind your business.

i am on topamax for maintenence therapy of migranes and i have dry eyes r/t contacts. i was really sleep deprived once while in nrsg school from doing nite clinicals, pupils were teeny tiny and eyes red... 0700 rolls around and boss asked me if i was high. i said no and asked her if she would like me to pee in a cup. she said yes just to be sure... and all they found in my system was... suprise... topamax. she apologized profusely and i told her she hurt my feelings too.... so you should never assume.

We are a profession and shouldn't be breaking the law.

Yes, I think it's wrong to smoke pot if you're a nurse, definitely.

If it were legal, it'd be a different story, but it's NOT!

Legal or illegal, as long as you are sober from intoxicating substances when you are in class, clinicals and while working as a nurse I do not give a crap what you do in your free time. That is up to the individual on how to live their lives while off the clock. I would never say a thing to anyone if I knew about someones substance use outside of the professional environment. Now if that person arrived to work, clinicals, etc under the influence I would make mention of it to the proper person as that is not safe practice.

Relax, some people occasionaly smoke at parties ,it is not a crime and they are far from being druggies.

Smoking MJ at parties is not a crime! What country do you live in? Get a conviction for that on your record and you can pretty much kiss your nursing license good-bye in some states.
