What would you do if you found out that a fellow nursing student is smoking marijuana?

And yet both are classified as Schedule I.

Best public sevice announcement ever.

if you are in the health care or public safety profession, you are held to a higher standard and should NOT use any drugs illegally.

Nurses arnt politicians, their private lives are actually private. So legality should have no bearing on the matter as long as they do their jobs. Sure, hospitals have to cover their asses with drug tests, but Im sure the person knew that risk.

I also have known people who have smoked regularly. The point is, as you said... if you are in the health care or public safety profession, you are held to a higher standard and should NOT use any drugs illegally.

Actually, I have a question for you. If the person lived in California, where medicinal marijuana is legal, had a valid prescription, and only smoked after work or on his off days, would you still have a problem?

Do you want that person to be a nurse ? I would not. RNs lose their licenses for doing drugs. Would you feel safe having this person on your staff ? I would not. If I were you , I would send a anonymous note to the dean if you are 100 percent sure that you saw this person smoking pott. Or you could do nothing, maybe he or she was at a party and just having a good time, experimenting so to speak. I personally dont smoke. I rarely drink, but I think I am going to drink a little when I go to the Catalina Wine Mixer.

Relax, some people occasionaly smoke at parties ,it is not a crime and they are far from being druggies. To the OP just let it go and go about your business, no one likes spies,I rather have 10 friends then 1 enemy.

That doesn't matter about the med weed, as pot is federally illegal. Federal law trumps state law.

One of the main reasons pot is banned is because it is associated with mexican americans, which has no medical basis whatsoever.

You mind running that one by us again? Weed has always been illegal, and I truly don't think you can find any proof that that prohibition is in any way related to Mexicans.

Despite the supremacy clause, I think the feds are letting that one go.

Read it again.

I said pot was associated to mexicans, not prohibition. Secondly, it wasnt federally banned until 1970, shortly after you were born.

100% incorrect, within the United States of America.

Regardless of the lack of enforcement, the premise stands.

Oh, I'm aware of the technicalities of the law. I was simply posting an honest hypothetical question because I was curious as to how much of RutterMama's opposition to nurses using marijuana was do to the drug itself, and how much was based purely on its illegal status.

Although, it is interesting to note that nurses are licensed by individual states, and not federally. When you take this into consideration, there actually is some question as to whether a state board of nursing will take action against the license of someone with a valid [according to the state] marijuana prescription.

Than I guess they would have to arrest half of the nation for using mind-altering substances.
