Nursing school hellions!

:chuckle

I guess that being in nursing school has definately taught me one thing. I NEVER want to be sick or hospitalized. Simply because I don't want any of my classmates taking care of me. I'm posting this simply because I want to know if this ignorance is endemic to my school or if its more widespread than that.

Here's my smidgeon of ignorance. One day in Patho class, we were discussing the AIDS epidemic and its prevalence in central Africa. One of my illustrious classmates looked at me, and with all honesty and seriousness, said," Yeah, AIDS is pretty common in Africa, but it dosen't matter because those people are immune to it."

Since I've learned that the best way to deal with ignorance is simply to ignore it, I just nodded my head and struggled to contain my laughter for the remainder of class.

So, if any of you have stories to share about fellow nursing students, just holler.

As for our school, these people get accepted because they look at their academic profile... number of classes completed and successful credits attained, score on ACT, cumulative GPA, GPA in science courses... there are no entrance interviews. Basically, if a person can score above a 20 on the ACT and has a 2.5 or above, they are fair game for entering the program.

The 'weeding out' phase comes later.

There are a few in my program that give cause to worry, but one in particular. She's latched on to me for whatever reason and sort of follows me around in clinical.

Ok, so one of our last clinical days last semester we're in with a laboring patient who is in transition, about 9 cms, anxious but still pretty comfortable with the epidural.

So MsStudentNurse of the year says, "Don't worry Mrs. _____, most people don't die in labor, although one did here just last week."

I literally had no words at that point. It was true, a patient had expired last week due to bilateral pulmonary emboli while on postpartum. It, of course, shook up the whole department.

So, the woman asked the doc was it true, the doc said it was, the woman said that student was never to come back in again, she got in a bit of trouble with the instructor, missed the delivery, in fact never returned to the birthing center. Spent the next 2 days in the antepartal testing center across the parking lot.

How's that for a truly crass thing to say to a patient?

No common sense, no bedside manner, no diplomacy.

Oh...my.....GOD. I am simply speechless. Was the NURSE in there when she said that??????? If I had a student say that to one of my patients, I woulda collared her in a minute and told her MYSELF and had a PROMT 'meeting' with her and her instructor.

Of course, one of my fellow students had to chime in and say, "Well, I'm only going to represent the school positively if you treat me well and give me what I want". The professor took one look at her and said, "with an attitude like that, maybe you should reconsider entering the program".

Ooooooooooooh....that chick is TOAST. :chuckle

We were studying the GU system, talking about TURP's and our instructor was talking about B+O suppositories for bladder spasms and one of the students asked where the suppository was supposed to be inserted. She thought they were inserted into the member.

P.S. She is a straight-A student.

If she had one she wouldn't....Youch!....LOL

I tutored students through Microbiology and am amazed at the lack of diagramatical thinking in someone that is going into a profession that calls for it.

I also experienced it in my honors section believe it or not! Students that could not conceptulize the etiology of glucose or creatinine in the urine. Students in my(our) lecture about Patent Ductus Arteriosus did not recognize which cath measurement was abnormal and why increase pressure/ o2 in right atrium would lead to the echo findings. Even after I explained it to them! They just stood there blinking like so many cattle......LOL!

I was going to run one of those instructor supervised study groups when clinicals start but you folks are making me think again about it. It sounds like it would be more work than a collaboration.

OK... serious as a heart attack here.... on of my illustrious fellow students came running towards us holding a clients chart... very excited. She says... "I guess I have a really good patient today... she must have done something good or she is an athlete or or something." When asked why she states with all seriousness.... "Because it says here in the the chart that she has a trophy"

OMG... still rolling!

wow....um...WOW.....

that's pretty bad...there is one girl that was in my program that i would definitely include in my admission paperwork, if hospitalized, she would not be able to even look at my chart or step in the room....i honestly don't know how she graduated....i could go on and on....and it was not a situational ignorance. I am suprised that she didn't forget to breathe.

ouch...sorry...you would have had to know her. Plus she cheated off my friend during exams....but she was never caught during the act. we tried though. Guess I am bitter that a cheater can get through NURSING school.

We just had a girl in my class ask if a man can catch endometrosis from preforming oral sex on a woman! :roll

Yeah that was too much.

i remember back in physiology, we were just starting the cardiac unit. The instructor was explaining the components of blood, when this one woman asked "So, plasma's the same as water?" i never heard the sounds of hands hitting forheads so loud before. (there were several EMTs and RNs in the class)

I had a micro class where the instructor asked "Has anyone heard of the 'triangle of death'? Anybody familiar with that term?" (triangular area in center of face from which infection can get into brain, cause encephalitis, etc.) This student raises her hand and says, "Um...isn't that where all those airplanes and boats disappear?" (Pray tell, what would that have to do with microbiology?)

We Were at clinical last week, and a student had a question for the instructor about a med that the patient was taking. So, at post-clinical conference, she( the instructor) brought the question up to the entire clinical group for a group discussion, at this time she asked the student to ask the question, and tell what it said on the MAR.... This student promptly said "MAR.... whats that???" He had NO IDEA what she was talking about!!! This was not his first episode of stupidity, and he is no longer in our class!! Thank god, because I don't think I could handle anymore of his stupid comments!
