DID I get the JOB?

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

It's been a long haul.......... I've been job searching for about 8 + months. I had some ROUGH days... felt like with every step I took I got pushed back 20.

I stutter, so I feel sometimes I don't always interview as well as I could.

I took my ACLS, and an ECG course in the meantime. I also started volunteering at a community health centre.

Anyways, I interviewed at a major hospital on wednesday. I felt the interview went well (I did my best) I asked him a few questions then I hit him with "what would be your ideal candidate for this position?" He kind of stumbled for an answer - went into talking about acute care experience but also someone with a drive and passion. He then asked me "is this you?" I then had the chance to sell myself a little bit more. I gave him my references and he gave me his card. He told me the successful person would be contacted this week or the latest next week.

I came back from the gym with a message from him.......

WOW. I hope to God he was calling to offer me the position. He also replied to my Thank You email asking me to call him at my earliest convenience. I called him back but was unable to reach him- so I left a message. Hope this doesn't become a game of tag :uhoh21: (this is what I'm scared of... I WISH he would have picked up the phone)

I also was offered a casual position at a very nice LTC facility. I start orientation tonight. I am soo thankful to finally have people "want" me. It's been such a stressful haul.

How does the hospital job sound? Do you think I landed it?

It's also full-time. God knows I need to pay off my student loans.

I hope I'm not getting my hopes up for nothing but I just keep reminding myself he said he would ONLY call the successful person.

Ps. a note to new nurses and new grades... make sure your references give you glowing recommendations- honestly, someone who speaks very highly of you.

no replies?

I was hoping I'd at least come home from my shift with some replies :uhoh3:

Please let us know if you got the job. Sounds like a good one!

Good job on asking him that one question. I think that is people's biggest downfall is when the interviewer asks if you ahve questions, you had better come up with some good ones.

I have a manager that frowns upon those that don't ask questions. That is important to him.

Good for you, for asking this manager that question. That was a smart move.

Funny about questions... I was interviewed by a surgeon, well, not the surgeon that I was scheduled to see, but a new younger one due to the practice owner still being in surgery. This young guy had to pinch hit, and didn't know what to say because he really didn't seem to know what the practice owner was looking for. So, it was a little awkward considering the ad they put out didn't say much. Well, I began asking about the position and he answered from what he knew and we were getting along etc. But, I decided to not keep asking questions because it was awfully one sided and I thought he seemed a little nervous if you would believe that. I figured that at some point I would talk to his boss. I did ask one thing tho, "Would I be the only RN here -- am I replacing anyone?" Logical question in my book, but he actually choked on his coffee. Pretty sure that was telling because he then quickly regained composure and artfully stepped right over that one and changed the subject after quickly saying that I would be the only one. Later I found on an internet search who the RN in question was, and seemed like things didn't work out so well for her I guess. Turned out that they ended up hiring a PA instead.

I don't understand what a "casual position" is....if you've already accepted a professional position, are you planning to drop them without notice if the other job comes through?

As for whether the missed call meant you got the job, of course it might. It also might be (since he said he'd call this week or next week and was actually calling within a couple of hours--very fast) that you missed something on the application, or he needed more information from you that he didn't have.

Casual position usually means it's per-diem/PRN.

Ah, ok. That's better :)

he didn't call within a couple of hours. It was 2 days after. (the end of the week) like he stated.

It's the long weekend here (I also got word that he might be on vacation next week from the receptionist- so how on earth with I know?) and I have no idea how I'm going to get into contact with him. I Just really want to know. I'm hoping with everything that the call meant the position is mine... I want this sooo bad.
