Nursing job that doesn't have to deal with docs?

Published

Are there any nursing jobs out there that do not have to deal with nasty doctors? I want to know. If you know of any good doctors out there, let me know. They are either egolistic or mean.

I want to quit nursing b/c I am so sick of the attitude that some doctors have towards me and some other nurses. I am really frustrated. Please help!:o

Hi Luvbuble,

I do school nursing, but I still have to put up with some administrative bullies at times. I used to be able to put up with the docs in the hospitals, but after some pretty heavy duty personal crises, I no longer had the reserve to do the healing I needed to do and put up with their stuff too.

I see that being assertive just seems to come naturally to some on these boards. Good for them. I have to work very hard at it. I have discovered EFT - emotional freedom technique at http://www.emofree.com and it seems to be helping somewhat. I pray you find your niche, whether within yourself or outside, or both.

Does anyone know what the average pay for an Aesthetic nurse who is certified in Botox and Restylane administration with thirteen years of nursing experience in other areas (Cardiology, Pediatrics, OBGYN) would be? Because this is such a new field, I'm having trouble finding out.

In dialysis you don't see the doctors much. Our doctors do rounds once or twice a week. There's more autonomy for nurses. As it turns out, most nephrologists are pretty easy going and easy to deal with, so the time you do spend with them is pretty tolerable.

Have to agree with the dialysis thing...... we have 4 Docs that round (1 per day) & so far they are all very pleasant. We mostly work on protocals & usually can handle anything that comes up....so far I'm absolutely loving my job!

What a great question. I also hated working with "I say jump--you say how high" docs. I found a great job, but the pay isn't so hot. It's school nursing. I worked at different schools and am my own boss. It was my favorite job after ER nursing, but in the ER there were those pesky docs who were jerks...not all of them but enough to make you hate it. I did school nursing for four years but had to quit this year to make some real money. Camp nursing is also a lot of fun but it's important to pick a good camp, and not everyone is able to do it. My personal opinion is that if you ever work in the ER for more than a couple of years and you pay attention, learn to be observant and ask questions, you will be so good you can work anywhere. ER nurses are the smartest, funniest, fastest and know how to throw a great party.

I thought I was the only one who had to deal with nasty Docs. I could go one forever about how rude and unprofessional ours are, but remember you are not alone!! I doubt that any Doc could top the ones I work with for rudeness and disrespect so if you ever want to compare notes......

How about nursing informatics as an option.

You could work as a home health nurse (seldom need to come in contact w/MD)

You could be a school nurse (even less)

I also worked at an outpt. IV Clinic (docs were few and far between)

Hope this helps.

I agree that most all docs have personality flaws. I think it has to do with them never recovering from working so many hrs during their rotations and studying so much, or maybe it's hereditary. The worst are cardiologists( in my opinion)

Good Luck!

Look into school nursing..................you barely ever have to talk to a doctor. You do have a clinical nursing director though.

you will come across nasty dr nurses people etc no matter where you work.you need to project you are a professional and deserve respect and that there are things that you will not tol.like name calling tantrums etc.call them on it .stand up for yourself.

The vast majority of docs I work with treat us nurses with respect. My hospital will not tolerate anything else. We once had a surgon arrested for assualt after he threw a retractor at a surg tech in the OR. The cops were waiting for him right outside the OR.

I think the problem of mean and nasty docs is a managment issue. All people should be treated with respect. I once offered to take a doc outside and kick his ass (I am 6'1, 240#, male, and a former army Ranger). Not the proper way to handle the situation but it did end the problem right then and there.

I will not tolerate being treated disrespectfully. In return I treat others with respect regardless if they are MD, RN, or CNA. Luckly I have now found a hospital where all staff are expected to act like mature adults and they don't tolerate anything else even from Docs.

working for an insurance company might be the thing- but I am sure that even there you have someone that has to be an wise cracker. Hold your head up- doctors as much as they like to think really could not run an hospital, office, clinic or anything else without nurses. We are the ones that keep things going( so what if they get all the credit?)

Have you ever done ICU or ER? These areas, you work with the same group of docs day in/day out. I've only done ER, and the docs have a very laid back relationship with the nurses...probably because they spend their whole 10 hour shift with the same nurses-everyone gets to know each other's quirks and are comfortable to call each other on it. We all have days when we say/do things we don't mean; everyone has their breaking point...I've snapped at doctors and they've snapped at me, but that's far from an everyday occurance and there is usually an apology by someone. Working in a close group makes us all into a happy little dysfunctional family!
