Are there any nursing jobs out there that do not have to deal with nasty doctors? I want to know. If you know of any good doctors out there, let me know. They are either egolistic or mean.
I want to quit nursing b/c I am so sick of the attitude that some doctors have towards me and some other nurses. I am really frustrated. Please help!
In my hospital years, I really had pretty good experiences with MDs. Now, I'm a community health nurse and MDs come to me for advice. Let me tell you, when you have expertise they need, they get really nice.
I've liked the protections I've had against bullying as a government agency employee.
Unfortunately, I have already worked in 3 different places and still have not found some normal "human" Doctors to work with. I hate to let them step all over me like a doormat.I am a hard working, sensitive nurse with great personality but I found most doctors and surgeons that I worked with are disrespectful and they don't treat me the way that I deserve to be treated.
wow - and though i have met nasty docs i have to say the majority of the docs in our area are either ok or really good and even a couple of just plain lazy lol , and even of the "nasty ones" there are only a small handful of those that get really really nasty and yelling and then its usually about something that was done wrong and something that was important. - i see this may be another benefit of working in small town. i'm sorry you cant get along with the docs. where do you live - is a bigger city ? my prayers going out that you are able to find a place where you wont have disagreements so ofetn.
Hmm - well if that's the case, I would ask a close friend or co-worker how you're coming across? Do you project confidence and the "I'm not going away until we get this issue resolved?" or do you phrase everything with a "please and thanks and its okay if you don't want to do it?" I have found that being assertive (not mean, nasty or malicious) is the best way to go. I have my facts at my fingertips when I talk with the MD so that I don't waste time. I present the bare bones facts, my proposed course of action and then ask what other options should we consider. I also use the word "we" as though I am automatically part of the decision making team. Hope this helps.
i dont know - i find please and thanks is a good thing - common courtesy is effective around here - i dont know about the " if you want" part - we dont say that, but we do make suggestions and they either follow them or give us other orders.
I worked for an MD/VP at a large corporation and had to interact with all of his MD direct reports. My boss was wonderful but his direct reports (who were renowned worldwide physicians) often got on my nerves. It was my first experience working with a large number of doctors. In time, I came to the conclusion that because they spent so much time studying medicine and science, they didn't have time for the classes on social skills.
After reflection, I came to the awareness that the value they brought to humanity and the lives they saved throughout their careers, allowed them extra slack from me. I found the more I thought about this, the less personally I took their behavior and attitude. I also learned to communicate differently and started every interaction with "Doctor, how may I help you today?" as soon as I saw them rushing down the hall in my direction (some were waiting at my desk when I arrived in the morning).
In time, I got to know their quirks and learned how to navigate through the drama. It took a lot of discipline for me to not personalize the way they communicated, and I learned to focus more on my problem solving skills. The reward for me was acquiring very valuable interpersonal skills which I will carry over into nursing.

Sorry to hear that you have not had good experiences with the doctors you work with. I work in ICU and most of our doctors our great. There are some that have egos and the like but they are far and few between. I'm lucky in that our chief of medical staff actually listens to us, so if we have a problem with a doctor he addresses it. Sometimes it dosen't change the ego doc's attitude but its nice to have someone listen to your complaints and attempt to change things.
