Nurses Safety

I would love to have ANY input on this subject. Where is the rule book on giving PRN pain medication ?? Does anyone out there have any input ?? :uhoh3:

I'm soo sorry you got fired. It must feel terrible.

Something is just not adding up though. They love you one minute and then fire you and report you to the BON the next?

Is it possible someone had a personal agenda for doing this?

Good luck and keep your chin up!

I am soooo sorry that happened to you. We do give prn meds about 15 minutes early sometimes. But if that has been an accepted albeit unwritten policy in your hospital, I would be very upset. Do you have a JCAHO visit coming up? Are they doing this to cover their butts in case they are called on this? I would bet that is the case. Have they had any mock surveys recently?

So, you have to be the scape goat for the whole hospital. I would definitely look into your options. Obviously you don't have a Union? I don't know much about your legal rights in this matter, but a visit to a lawyer may be beneficial. Perhaps somebody would even give you a free consultation.

Good luck. That really sucks.

Wow! I am so sorry to hear about your circumstances. Were they trying to make an example out of you? Get a lawyer for the BON appearance. It seems like a warning would've been more appropriate first before this drastic action. Are they implying that the pts. did not always recieve the meds? That's the only way I could think they would do something like this. Good luck.

if you have , it is time to let them know what is going on....in other words "lawyer up"

Absolutely lawyer up ! The BON is not your friend. The mission of all BON's is to "Protect the Public" not represent nursing or help you in any way. Everyone should have their own that supplies you with a lawyer for 'BS' just such as this. Of course you didn't do anything wrong, obviously you have an unknown person there who wanted you gone for whatever reason and used this as an excuse:balloons:. This happens all too frequently. I am so sorry this happened to you, please don't let it make you question yourself as either a compassionate human being or a great nurse.

Like the others, I am so sorry for you. I hope that you will not go down without a fight. Wishing you success with this.

i am shocked they would report you for giving percoet 30 minutes early, esp if you've been doing this for a long time. i as a rule don't give out narcs early. i am sorry this happened to you... are you sure there's more to this than they are saying? has other people been turned in and fired for this .. or just you? my prayers are with you

Whatever happened to being written up? There must be something more. Why lose a good nurse over a med error that didn't result in an event? Looking back, had you been warned about this before?

You can always add your 2 cents to your BON record.

Yikes! I've been know to give PRNs 30 mins early. Guess I'll stop doing that!

Hopefully the OP has . I can't tell you how good it feels to have it!

Im not saying I agree with the outcome of the event and I do think that being fired and reported to the BON for this is taking things to the extreme but I am saying that legally I do believe that the hospital will have a case if they choose to follow thru for the mere fact it could be considered practicing medicine or overstepping nursing boundaries. I know the 30 minute rule but that doesnt pertain to narcs or prn meds because the chance of receiving a extra dose of the prn med is there if everyone gives the med 30 minutes before it is due again. That doesnt have a chance of happening on regular scheduled doses of meds if they are given early or late because the next dose is already scheduled.

We give PRN's 30 minutes early.

Did some harm come to the patient? Something is missing from this. No one et reported to the BON for staying within the 30 minute window.

Thanks Kymmi, I wish they had just written me up or probation or something, no one in HR or other wise could come up with a policy/procedure on this subject. I was not trying to do anything wrong or harmful, simple correction would have done the trick with me !!!

It sounds like you were treated harshly. I'm sorry.

Am I correct that you have no union to back you up?
