do nurses have to ride in elevators often?

Sometimes it is. There will be a few people that will tell you that's what aides and orderlies are for, but the truth is, the nurse sometimes has to go with the pt. because of the pt.'s condition.

In other words, you may not have to do it all the time, but you won't be able to avoild it all the time.

I work in a three story hospital and I use the elevator often. Taking specimens to the lab, going to the cafeteria, getting things from other depts, etc......Your option is the stairs. That's not a problem where I work but in a big hospital it would be. Good Luck

Where I work there is really no choice. Our unit is locked down and we have to swipe in and out at the staff elevator.

As a result of being stuck in two elevators, being in an elevator makes me very uncomfortable. I do take them when I have to, but I tend to avoid them when I can.

Is it part of a nurse's job to bring patients up and down in the elevators?

I got stuck in one during a storm in Puerto Rico, it was such a rotten experience it makes my eyes water

I have elevator phobia too and I got stuck in the elevator at the hospital for 20 minutes last week. Operator said they were having trouble locating maintenance. :uhoh21: It sucked but I was glad it was me and not one of the patients. Back to the stairs now...

I wish I could use the stairs. The exercise would do me good. But being locked down, the only time we can use the stairs is in an emergency.

why is the floor locked down? Is it for criminals?

No it's a labor and delivery unit and these days, most are locked for security.

I worked in ER and we did a lot of transporting patients via elevators-daily. Nurses had to take their patients to tests or any unit that required the pt to be on a monitor.
