Nurses and Nursing Students: what was/is your biggest pet peeve in nursing school?

Published

What is your biggest pet peeve about being in nursing school or things that happened while you were in nursing school???

Don't you hate it when:

you study your *$$ off and still dont get an A!

when you hear nursing students say "ewww thats gross" or "it stinks in here, im gonna throw up" or "ew i cant chage a depends thats so gross" -that drives me nuts! i dont know how these students will make it in the world of nursing....

come on nursing students i know we all have something that really irks us about school (even though we all loooove it!)....

THIS DRIVES ME CRAZY !!!! :banghead:

And it happens ALL the time. This is why it sometimes doesn't pay to study that hard because, someone who doesn't study much can do just as well as you because the teachers are not consistent in what they teach or how they test on the material.

I can't tell you how many times teachers have told us conflicting information. And they don't follow the textbooks either. Even when I've pointed out the right answer in the textbook ... the teacher still insisted the answer was "wrong." It almost gets to the point where doing all the reading actually hurts you on the test.

A lot of times ... you've got a better chance of getting the "right" answer by throwing darts at a board. It's totally random.

:angryfire

Naw, its always best to study... never know when the stuff stored in your brain housing group may come in handy. ;)

I have been blessed with an awesome school and awesome classmates (who don't take calls during class). On the other hand, by BIGGEST pet peeve are the students who make a big deal out of EVERY quiz, test, paper, assignment, and presentation. If everyone I talk to is going to freak out about EVERYTHING it's going to make ME freak out too! I am the kind of person who likes to get the job done and not stress out about every single little thing that comes along. These students who sweat the small stuff are going to give me stomach ulcers by the time I graduate I swear.

I hate when profs spend most of our class time teaching us about what they wrote their dissertation on...i know what they are talking about is important but there is more than one subject on the nclex...also it b ugs me when clincial faculty and professors contradict eachother...

also last week in clinical i did something that one faculty had taught me and my new instructor reprimanded me saying i did it wrong...come to find out its one of those things that can be done many ways! why do that?!

or when they contradict what is in the text book and then on the exam dont want to take that answer...they tell us we should know that it wasnt right? how am i supposed to know it wasnt right if it was in the text book? ugh.

I would have to say my biggest pet peeve is the fact that the teachers thought you should know everything in clinicals. They didn't want to help at all. Hello I am learning here.

it kinda bugs me that the director and nurses office staff treats us kinda crappy. it always seems like we are bothering them if we go in to ask a question. whenever the director comes in and talks to the class it gets kinda scarey, she is like a drill sargent :angryfire. also during clinicals when we go to a new floor the nurses seem to try and ignore us at first and act like we aren't there.

my pet peeve about nursing school was being so busy that your family and friends (friends who were not in nursing school) would call you and say,"i just wanted to make sure you were still alive." :chuckle

me too, i had a lot of guilt trips from friends..."why don't you just skip studying and let's go to lunch or whatever" i already would feel so guilty about how consumed i was all the time.

(CNA class, but still)

1. The class is half Filipino and half white. We are split along culture lines... the Filipinos ridicule the whites, the whites can't understand why the Filipinos won't study.

2. The instructor tries to bring certain students down. She picks on the oldest student (who is 58) for having other obligations. She picks on the youngest student (me!) because I earn the highest scores on tests. Once or twice a day, she'll make some catty remark like "I know Sarah doesn't need to study, but the rest of you do..." Thanks muchly, but Sarah studies her behind off at breaks and at home.

Don't let that bother you, Sara. You know you study your butt off, so you don't need to worry about that, hon. Who knows what your prof's problem is, but don't let that affect you. In fact, let that be a catalyst into doing even better. I've been through something like this, and you know what? That's the best way to fight that: with your mind. Good luck! ;)

Thanks so much for that, Mave :balloons:

Another peeve: The book will give one answer to a certain question, but the answer key for the test gives quite another. It muddles everybody up.

Oh, man my med-surg books were like that. Luckily, the instructors weren't the kind to say "well the key says this, no exceptions".

Isn't it great? :trout: We end up with, for ex., the book telling us that we should always, always respect the patient's beliefs and values, under all circumstances - but the test asks: "If a patient's beliefs and values are different from yours, what should you do?" with the ostensible correct answer being "Tell the nurse!" Right...

"I just took Mr Smith's vitals, Mrs Compton. His pulse is 78, and by the way, he's a Baptist. That gives me the heebie-jeebies."

pompous professors who always feel the need to rub it in your face that you are still working on your nursing degree while they have theirs already.

What gets me the most about ringing cell phones is when they pick up the call and say really loud to the caller on the other line that "I am in class call your right back"
