Nurses and Nursing Students: what was/is your biggest pet peeve in nursing school?

What is your biggest pet peeve about being in nursing school or things that happened while you were in nursing school???

Don't you hate it when:

you study your *$$ off and still dont get an A!

when you hear nursing students say "ewww thats gross" or "it stinks in here, im gonna throw up" or "ew i cant chage a depends thats so gross" -that drives me nuts! i dont know how these students will make it in the world of nursing....

come on nursing students i know we all have something that really irks us about school (even though we all loooove it!)....

Putting myself all out on this one. I'm a nontraditional student, 40 something, with two teenagers. I do have another degree (fire science); however, I always remember what my parents taught me. Treat others as you want to be treated. My kids know better than to call me during classes!

good kids :)

Trained them right! If there's blood, call 911. I can't help you from where I'm at.

Respect is a two way street; I would be SO embarassed if I thought I was disturbing someone else in class.

My biggest pet peeve in school was being assigned to a group project, and the other group members don't want to pull their weight. We all know the type: the lazy types who want to skid by on your hard work. :(

Specializes in Home Health, Hospice.

Oh boy, I could go on and on ...

How about 3 different instructors grading 3 different ways and teaching skills 3 different ways!

Also, the student that thinks bedmaking and baths are beneath her and shes a PN student! She wants to delegate.........

Same student (who wants to be a surgical nurse), refusing to go into a mrsa room, saying " I have kids, I can't go in there. I won't have to deal with this in surgery!"

YIKES, get a clue.

Specializes in Neuro, Critical Care.

I hear that! I can't stand those snobby types in clincal who don't want to "get their hands dirty" i mean come on! I seriously took my CNA course with this girl and when we did our clinical she informed the whole class (about 6 of us and our instructor lol) that she didnt like old people and "they were gross" ...she also informed me (over and over again) that she had "a PCA/CNA job waiting for her at University hospital" and that she wouldn't ever have to do peri care, bedpan or change a depends there...hm wonder what she thinks she will be doing....

i kept thinking to myself geez...you are in the wrong profession! she drove me nuts the entire class...especially in skills lab! all the skills "were stupid" or "pointless" she never wanted to practice just to "go home". ugh...interested to see if i see her on graduation day....

oh yeah! anyone have any of those..."my aunt or my dad or my whatever is a doctor blah blah blah" lol??? drives me nuts....

oh and i miss the days at OSU when I only had classes tues and thurs (full time too)...geez i USED to have sooo much free time....

I an in LTC But I am going to school to be an RN anyways while in clinicals there was this girl that I was partnered with and we went into a room and it totally stunk she was like "eeeeewwwww I can't believe people actuall s**t on themselves!" the person was totally embarassed. Moral of story : pet peeve is people who go into nursing without any empathy or tact.

its amazing there are more of them than you think!! you can always tell at the beginning of the semester which ones will make it and which ones wont...i love the ones who go into nursing and then figure out with its all about and drop out...what did you think it was going to be like?

Can't wait until she's old. !!!!! People like that make me sick.

We are all going to be there one day my dear !

Ignorant fool that one !!!!!! Or unenlightened...uninformed, uneducated, unschooled, badmannered, boorish, ill-mannered, rude, finally.....uncouth.

I'm sorry. The elderly are one of the reasons I went into nsg.

The elderly? I embrace them. I'm sorry for being so ....I dont know what. I guess just too sensitive on this matter.

Specializes in 5 yrs OR, ASU Pre-Op 2 yr. ER.

The person who had a story for every disease and condition in the book, and would proceed to take a full 30 minutes to describe.

Cell phones. Especially during tests. It was SO rude.

People being labeled as "stuck up" or "bookworm" or "having no life" just because they got a 4.0.

People who called you a ***** when you declined to copy your notes for them, nevermind that you saw them doodling in their notebook and text messaging people. I'm all for helping, but not carrying, sorry.

People who acted like an expert because their mom/dad worked at (fill in place of employment here).

And group projects. A couple of people said that i wasn't a team player if i didn't want to do one. It wasn't that, it was just out 5 people in a group, usually 2 or 3 did all the **** work. And i have zero tolerance for that kind of team work.

I totally agree, when we did our clinicals in the LTCF she never wanted to do any of the skills, shed back up and just kinda stare, finally i'd give in and do it (even though she was supposed to). I don't know if she thinks that she will NEVER get old or what but I have news for her...I just kept thinking that could be my mom or me!! in a few years and some of the attitudes I saw there frightened me!!! Some people (especially a few in my class)fail to realize that the residents are people!! it makes me sick how much disrespect some have for the elderly...well that could be why she BARELY passed her clinical portion! When she saw that I got all excellent marks she started whining that she didnt understand why the instructor said she wasnt compassionate enough and didnt think nursing was for her!

Yeah ... classmates, instructors, etc. can drive you crazy.

But it would all be more bearable if I could sleep, and if there were a few more days off to catch up on studying.

Even on weekends they make us do clinicals, health fairs, community service assignments, etc.

So ... no rest for the weary. I'm just trying to figure out how I'm supposed to actually learn and remember all this stuff when I'm totally sleep deprived.

sleep depraved is an understatement...lol....ive always existed on atleast 8 hrs of sleep...not any more!

so the very first day of my new program I met this girl who started off our very first conversation with..."my mom is a nurse and she teaches nursing at blah blah so i would know better than..blah blah" lets just say she didnt make very many friends...sigh..there are 15 looong months ahead of us too...tisk...same girl who when I asked a question in class (question was aimed at the teacher of course) cut off the teacher and answered my question...i was annoyed i mean of course her being a pharm. tech would know more about nursing than our PHD instructor...how irratating...besdies she takes every chance she gets to let us know that her mom is a nurse and she teaches at this univ...blah blah blah...although 1 person out of 31 isnt bad, everyone else seems pretty awesome:)

oh got another one...dont you hate it when you have 500 lbs of books to carry around! i need my own personal massuse.
