Nurses not making enough...wait what?

Published

I have a several friends that are nurses at local reputable hospitals. They complaint to me all the time that they are not making nearly as much as they should be. Most of them have been working for 4yrs now and complaining that they should be making $30 or more.

I keep telling them that any other job out there does not pay their employees that much money starting out, so they should be happy the amount that they are getting. Are they just greedy or do you think they should deserve more?

I didn't quite make it to $30/hour with 20 years experience and a host of advanced degrees and specialty certifications.

Since our locum ED docs were paid $300 an hour, I feel like I was easily worth $100 in the same environment. What the job is worth and what it pays are drastically different, a fact I had to learn to accept.

No, I don't think your friends are greedy.

And for the record, I don't think CNAs are paid nearly enough either. It doesn't matter that an RN has more of an educational background, CNA jobs are physically demanding and worth a heck of a lot more than someone flipping burgers at Mickey D's.

I really have to agree with this, esp LTC CNAs that have 10-20 residents or more depending on the shift.

Dealing with sicker more demanding residents, scarce supplies, lack of good behavior management (gotta love the regs that require us to do dose reductions).... Now they are not making enough.

I think alot of us will agree that we have all thought we have not made enough, espec after a more than difficult shift or two.

After all, we don't do much for our pts. The MD's just do all the care by themselves. lol

You can say that again, and again:yeah: especially when I see commercials and the physician is the only healthcare member mentioned. I would love to see how it would be just one day without nurses, ooops!!! i take that back, because it would be a catastrophe!!!!!:uhoh3:

Definitely depends where you live!

Do you think you should be paying a "door man" in NYC $55.00 an hour to open the door for you but not a least that much to a nurse for cleaning your a$$ and for potentially saving your life? remember nurses are at the bedside "vigilant" looking out for you life... I'm just saying this to illustrate a point because my cousin is a door man in NYC making mega dinero, and all he does is greets you every time you enter in or out of your building and hold the door for you. In Christmas time (holiday season), his tips alone can allow him to live rent free for a couple of months, but us nurses not even a bonus from the health institution! what is wrong with this picture!!!!!!! LOL

I dunno...I just found out my sis, with 5 yrs experience as a SLP (which requires a master's) is going to be making $42K at her new job...and that's competitive wages for our area.

New RNs in my area start out at $20/hr, generally with 3% yearly raises, so there's no way they're at $30/hr within 4 years.

:confused:If seems like if they aren't making what they feel is fair after 4 years, why not take it up with their employer? Maybe they can give the employer an ultimatum: either a raise or I'm blowing the joint!:D

Go talk to a paramedic about their salaries and tell me a nurse is underpaid. No offense, I'm an RN as well, but RN's have it pretty good. I know some that work really hard and some that sit on their butts and do next to nothing all day for gobs of cash. Ironically, it seems the busier an EMS station is, the less they get paid. I worked 48 shifts and would run anywhere from 15-25 calls in that time (rural, each call is probably gonna take you an hour or so to complete) and I made 11.33 an hour and I had the same degree then as the one i have now as a nurse, so as much as I wish we got paid more as nurses, I think back to just very short time ago, the things I had to do, the things I had to see, the responsibilities i had, the dangers we faced, the horrible lifestyle, and the fact that it was just me and my partner out there for 11.33 an hour and I don't think my new nursing gig is such a bad deal.

That just tells me you were grossly underpaid before, not that nurses are overpaid. Where I live paramedics get paid $20-25 an hour and nurses start at $30 an hour.

I think you should mind your own business. Since you have no idea what your friends do, or are responsible for, you have no way of judging thier worth.

When you can come up with a value table that can tell me EXACTLY how much someone should be compensated for the education and experience needed to recognize impending trouble; and the skills needed to intervene to save a life, then and only then can you tell me what your nurse friends OUGHT to make.

I love this big apple too! I have to say there are more jobs opportunities here, more people on public insurance so there are many health institutions that hire nurses. As far as a door man job I am waiting on line for that one, imagine no liabilities and did I forget to mention they are union! Lol

True, I was merely stating that perhaps people should realize that it could be worse.......a lot worse
