Nurse stereotypes

Published

As a male, I'm going to look pretty silly in a short, white skirt, white stockings (though, I do have the thighs for them), Mary Janes, and one of those clip on hats.

Oh well. I guess that's the price one must pay to have a career worth coming to work for. ;)

on another note....do you know a sterotype that I have been getting lately that is really ticking me off... that all nurses do is personal care and wipe bums!

I realize that yes it is part of the job description, but we do SO SO much more than that.

for example: at the dentist he was asking me about my job....when I talked about nursing...he asked me how I minded putting people on bedpans and that sort of thing......

the other day when getting help adjusting my resume....the "career services advisor" asked me to write down my skills from my last job, and he gave the example personal care, and then asked me if there were any technical skills in nursing....

I'm sorry but these sterotypes really bother me...how many other people out there do you suppose think that is all we do!

I understand how you feel demeaned. You are a professional clinician. Never forget that.

A sad joke, maybe?

Here's a chill pill.

My comment wasn't meant as a dig. I really didn't get it, but then again I don't usually get jokes! :clown:

I tried a "chill pill" and am still waiting for it to kick in!

My least favorite stereotype is that I'm also a psychiatrist, accountant, Dr. Ruth and your priest. I wanna scream "this is a scrub top NOT a cape !!"

Now we know why nurses used to wear those blue capes! Super powers!

We used to have superpowers -- but we gave them up when we decided scrubs were more comfortable than white uniforms, caps, and blue capes ... :)

I hate the steroetype that nurses are sweet angels. Really...if only people could be a fly on the wall in our break room or med room.

Because thinking of nurses as a selfless and giving profession is just totally unacceptable.

Actually, yes, I think so. Nurses are human - therefore entititled to human emotions. The steroetype of nurses as selfless and giving, and "martyrs" is the reason many burn out so quickly. That steroetype causing patients, employers, co-workers and ourselves to expect us to do too much. We work 12 hour shifts without meals, bathroom breaks, or any breaks becuase of it - which means we are preforming at our best. That places us and our patients in danger.

So, no, I do not an want to be seen as an "angel", "saint", "selfless" or ect. I see that as a weakness to the profession, and the reason we are bullied by others and ourselves. I am a human with human emotion and needs.

OP, where have you worked?

Just curious.
