Nurse, Madonna, and waitress??

Nurses Relations

Published

Just wondering how many of you got the impression that too much of the general public's view of nurses seems unrealistically high or on the other side, they treat us with the same disdain as gum on the bottom of one's shoe. Not patients, more like visitors or in social circles.

Yoiks, I didn't even consider any other option until I read your comment. Now I'm thinking of those instruments that are glasses filled with various levels of water....

I swear, working in health care is pushing me toward the socially unacceptable line. Bodily functions and death-and-dying, the social taboos, are at least half of every working day.

Nothing like changing out a BMS on a pt who has VRE and C-diff while discussing what you're going to cook on your days off. Nursing warps you for sure!!

I was wondering when they were going to change the title, surprised it wasn't bleeped out right away! lol

I don't advertise I'm a nurse because that will usually lead to people asking for medical advice and telling me about all their health woes. And if they know where I work I might hear about the terrible treatment their family member got when they were a patient, which may or may not be true, perception is not always reality, but it has nothing to do with me.

As for rude patients or families these are the minority although sometimes it doesn't feel like that when you are dealing with them! Truly most patients and families are polite and appreciative to me. I really don't mind getting them something to drink if I have the time. Some hospitals actually have a break area for the visitors complete with free refreshments, which is a nice touch I think, but not something we have where I work.

I didn't see anything wrong with it. Those who practice the oldest profession are probably upset the title was switched out with waitress of all jobs?.

I know. And I thought it was funny. We ARE adult professionals, who are having a discussion &/or joking around outside of work. I wonder what's up with the heavy handed editing lately?

I was actually wondering what the singer Madonna had to do with nurses and waitresses...until i googled it.

I did not know that there were other "Madonna's" besides Madonna.

Really?? The whole Madonna/Wh... Thing is a very well known contrast, as if women can only be one or the other. Much like the more common saying of "a lady in the streets and a freak in the sheets". See all the things you can learn on here!!

I'm disappointed.

I thought that the title of this thread was going to be the name of a new girl rock group :)

And I was gonna choose Madonna, as I would love to dress like her circa 1983.....

On only one occasion have I felt that I was treated with disdain because of my profession. Years ago, I attended a bridal shower for a good friend who was a first year elementary school teacher. As I was introduced to the other women at the gathering, the women all said the same thing- "Hi, nice to meet you, do you teach?" They were not impressed that I was a new nurse in a LTC facility, most of them seemed downright disgusted. It was a lonely afternoon, as I was excluded from all of the teacher talk.

The babysitter. Yeah, that's what I went to college for, to be called the babysitter.

I once had an obnoxious surgeon tell me to my face that nurses are babysitters.
