heymynameisLA......

Do you mean the Nurse Corps loan repayment? or the National Health Service Corps? Are you aware of the NHSC SUD and rural loan repayment programs also? If you mean the Nurse Corps, I assume you are at a non-profit?

Yes!  So sorry--realized I wasn't super clear.  I applied for the Nurse Corps loan repayment program.  I work at a non-profit community mental health center in an urban area.

I don't feel I'm a great writer and would love someone who is a better writer to modify this. Shorter is always better too, but.... this is what I sent to Tina Smith's office (Minnesota senator - 651-221-1016). I plan to call her office also this week. Anyone else in Minnesota, please reach out to her. She's big on rural health and mental health.

Dear Tina Smith, I would like nurses to have the Nurse Corps Loan Repayment program be exempt from federal taxes just as it is for doctors and practitioners through the National Health Service Corps Loan Repayment program.

It’s a fortuitous time and way to reward nurses/front line health care workers working in non-profit facilities. It would be another great way to encourage nurses and nurse practitioners to work in non-profits/community health/community mental health facilities in high need areas.

The basics/differences of the 2 loan repayment programs:

Nurse Corps Loan Repayment program - MUST PAY FEDERAL TAXES

-For: Nurses (RN's, APRN's), Nurse Faculty

-Must work in NON-PROFIT facility or eligible nursing school (for nurse faculty)

-Must have high debt to income ratio (>100% )  to receive funding

-Must work in high need area (HPSA score >14)

National Health Service Corps Loan Repayment program -FEDERAL TAX EXEMPT

-For: Physicians, PA's, NP's, Midwives, Dentists

-Can work in FOR PROFIT facility

-Only the NHSC SUD programs at SUD facilities allow registered nurses to qualify for this loan repayment program

-Must work in high need area (HPSA score >14)

Student loan forgiveness is now exempt from federal taxes. Student loan repayments through the NHSC program are exempt from federal taxes. Loan repayments through the Nurse Corps Loan Repayment and Nurse Corps Scholarship programs are not exempt from income.

I encourage you to consider action to make the Nurse Corps Loan Repayment program exempt from federal taxes to reward nurses and encourage them to work in non-profits in high need/rural areas.

I think this is great! I sent it over to my state senators in Michigan.

Hello

I was recently awarded the Nurse Corps' loan repayment. But I live IN NYC and we have a lot of taxes. They state that they will with hold federal on the the W4 but they give little guidance on how to pay the state and local taxes on this. Does any one know how?  Because if I am unable to deduct state and city taxes. It will be  a headache. I called BHW and they gave me no guidance

thank you

I would speak to an accountant about this if I were you. In order to cover yourself, you will need to increase your withholdings for state taxes, so you will receive less money per paycheck. Based on what you receive form Nurse Corps, it will change your income tax bracket. You will want to calculate your total income and adjust your withholdings accordingly. This would also be a good time to find ways to maximize your non taxable income, e.g. max out retirement contributions, HSA/FSA if you have them, etc.

What's your DTI and HPSA score?

I'm not sure on either, but I did end up getting my contract to sign later that day! YAY!

Hi Everyone-  I am a finalist for Nurse Corps. I am a little concerned about the work requirement. I am in an AGACNP Program, interested in outpatient cardiology. Will I only be allowed to work in a primary care setting? Does anyone know if there are opportunities to work in outpatient cardiology within the work requirement?

Congratulations!

It's funny that you applied, but didn't know either the HPSA or DTI. Surely something led you to submit an application. Regardless, hopefully you can breathe a little easier now, I sure know I am!

Is anyone still getting finalist emails after being "Under Review" all this time. I'm thinking I probably just didn't get it.

You should call and ask them for any specifics. However, all transfers must have prior approval. As long as the tier is the same it shouldn't be a problem. That is all in the nurse corps document.

What do you mean by transfer and tier?

Same boat. Wish they’d reject me already so I can go ahead and apply for my state loan repayment program. They require a rejection letter from a federal funding program to be considered for state.
