Things you'd LOVE to be able to tell patients, and get away with it.

Just curious as to what you would say. Mine goes something like this: Nurses Relations Video Nurse Life

Updated:

Hi, my name is AngelfireRN, I'll be your nurse tonight.

I am not a waitress, nor am I your slave.

Yelling and hurling obscenities at me will not get you your pain meds any sooner than they are ordered. Nor will having your family member or entourage do the same.

Threatening lawsuits and having umpteen family members camp out in the halls or hold up the nurse's station will not get you preferential treatment.

Physically grabbing me as I go down the hall is NOT a good idea.

I do not give the orders, but I do have to follow/enforce them. This is something that you should take up with your doctor.

No, I will not call him again to ask him for more pain medicine. He has been called twice and has said no both times.

No, I will not give you his number so you can "straighten him out".

No, you are not my only patient, and I highly doubt that you are single-handedly paying my salary. On the off chance that you are, let's talk about a raise.

NO, NO, NO, I most empahatically will NOT come get you when it is time for your next pain shot while you are having a smoke break. I also will not bring it to you in the smoking room. (Have actually said that, I am allergic to cigarettes. I did it once, had an asthma attack, desatted to 83, and turned blue, according to the patient and my charge nurse, after the patient had to help me back to the floor).

No, I don't really care if your family has not eaten all day, they drove here by themselves, they are not sick, and no, I will not call for 6 guest trays. (This of course, is if the patient in question does not need all 6 family members present, and is not at death's door).

No, you may not have 3 six-packs of soda from the kitchen, there are other people that would like a snack, too.

No, they will not open up the kitchen up just for you, at 1 in the morning, because you don't like the snacks we have on the floor.

I could think of hundreds, but those will do for a start. I know it sounds mean, but this is why I got out of bedside nursing. When a hospital becomes the Hilton, I'm gone!

Have fun!

This is more to the families than the patient.

of course you are 'looking' for a placement for your mother but lets be realistic, she will still be here come new year wont she. I mean we worked so hard getting her mobile only for the moment we get her into a placement you tell the staff not to bother making her do anything for herself and that they must do it all for her so when she comes back to us she is right back at the beginning and no one will take her as she wont do anything for her self, despite being perfectly able to.

she cannot stay here, we are not a care home. We are an ortho ward. We fixed her hip and rehabbed and discharged her. That was 15 weeks ago. On this admission she was fit for discharge 6 weeks ago, funding was in place 6 weeks ago, but we still have to play this game.

We have so many patients like this at the moment, its driving me nuts. Ive come back from 3 weeks away from the ward to be met by familiar faces. These people should have been discharged weeks ago. Patients and their families have actively turned down beds in rehab facilities that we,the staff, have worked ourselves to the bone to get. I mean why do we bother :(

Good on you Angel! I've been chewed out by everyone it seems today.

I think you just have to tell people things straight sometimes. I don't BS around now, and after the day I've had with my agency, I have fired off some very upfront emails, though the people I've sent these emails to have just set my wick burning!

I am SO GLAD you said to that patient 'your probs require effort on your part'. There is too much babying going on sometimes and these types of people seem to think they can get away with just being rude all the time.

I cared for a woman in HDU a few weeks ago, who seemed to think I was her personal handmaiden. She c/o not getting a shower, when the other nurse had gone on her break and I had 2 very sick patients to care for, a new admit who's pain wasn't under control and this whining woman. I just said to her the shower will wait till tomorrow. I mean, she isn't going to DIE because she hasn't had a shower (she wanted one cos her drains came out that day). She had a bed bath so that would have to be enough. She wasn't happy, but I don't care anymore.

I'm trying to start up my own business now. I don't think I could handle another year of nursing - I'm keeping my options open till my bills are paid!

How is the bubby going? How far along are you now?

I'm 5 months along, find out boy or girl on Wednesday!!! Thanks!

Would you rather a pressure dressing that may be a bit of a PITA to take off or would you like to continue bleeding? (I actually did say that one.)

No, I am not in the business of 'ripping' Elastoplast off your abdomen, but I am not going to stand here for 20 minutes and wait for you, a grown woman to whine and slap my hands away while I'm trying to - slowly - remove it. If you like, I can send the MD in here to take it off. I promise he won't be as gentle.

Your tears are not moving me. You are being manipulative and I am not going to play your game.

I've decided to take time off from being an angel and am going to be an angle instead - hard, pointy and unyielding. Who's with me ?!

To the family member at bedside that watches me and is SO sugary sweet while I'm in the room, and talks about how wonderful I am, ect then before I can even get the door closed, she changes her tune and says "can u believe this nurse?? She's _____ (pick all or any of - lazy, mean, fat, slow, and on and on.)

No, there's not a vapor lock before I even cross the threshold - just because I have my back turned doesn't mean I can't hear you. Geeeezz!

You need a shower. BAD!!

Oh, you need cleaned up after you pee'd? Ok, but no moaning and shuttering when I clean your lady parts this time, telling me to 'take your time'. I'm not a man-whore at these wages.

OK, sounds like a plan to me! And I can put on my "Boston-Subway-Face" which will drive-home the POINT!:cool:

That's the facial expression which is (correctly) interpreted as meaning: "Don't even THINK of messing with me!"
