NP Salary

Nursing Students NP Students

For nursing students like myself, I thought it would be helpful and interesting to see what type of salary is out there for graduating nursing students for different area's while comparing the salary of NP and RN. Looking around the site, I see different salary threads, but many replies are from nurses with 10 or more years experience, or the threads are years old and the starting salary is long outdated. I thought it would be more helpful to have a thread with Nurse Practitioners who are fresh out of school and what their starting salary is and what year that was.

I don't actually have a NP job yet, but my specialty is pediatric acute care. This means that I can only work in a pediatric hospital. There is only one in my state, so I will contribute to this because I already know the starting salary. There are no negotiations unless you have lots of experience. I just graduated in May.

I will graduate as FNP in December and my instructors said the average salary for their new NP grads is right at $70k

Just to piggyback, it does depend on where/how you work AND if you are a senior RN. In my case, there was very little salary increase, I'm figuring a few grand. Granted, my situation is a bit weird - I'm a fed.

I was was a senior (near topped out) critical care nurse, +CEN, evening and weekend diff. I actually made more working weekend nights than as a NP now.

Money isn't everything and the headaches are much different now. I went from doing and taking to examining and ordering. The politics are almost nil and I do not miss the charge nurse management role. I really think folks need to take some time to soul search before investing tens of thousands and countless hours toward advanced practice. I most certainly would not advise jumping for the cash, many will be disappointed.

There are some benefits that outweigh a few more bucks (at least for me). I have a great schedule, super boss and sweet office arrangement. I have options galore to seek a doctorate and work with university faculty that are supportive. There are still "those" days, but I am happy and for this old nurse/NP, that's saying something!

Specializes in Cath, EP, Cardiac Surgery, ICU.

List your starting RN hourly wage: This was in 1991, so I don't recall. Currently, I am "topped out" at about $35 hourly

How many years did you work as an RN before going for NP: 21 years (24 years by the time I finished NP program)

What your starting hourly wage as a NP was: Will start at nearly $88,000/year, working four 10 hour shifts per week with a possibility for profit sharing. Additional benefits include paid malpractice, paid time for CMEs

Whether it's a hospital: Yes. Also will see patients in outpatient setting.

What state you live in: mid-South
