16-yr-old girl signs into the ER, states, "My mom wants the doctor to check me because I'm claustrophobic and scared of big dogs."
That's so sad. I am a firm believer in broken hearts, I've seen it too many times. One that I will never forget: an elderly man, CPR in progress. While we were working on him, his wife had an MI. We had her in a room down the hall. She died two days later. They were buried together.
i would love to see them all buried together.
it just doesn't seem natural, to have 1 left behind...esp after literally, a lifetime together.

very sad but true.i cared for a lil (little old lady) who had been married for over 70 yrs.
after she died, her husband requested hospice services.
i asked him what he was dying from.
he softly said, "a broken heart".
i still get teary when i think of him.
he never did receive hospice, but did die 6 months and 2 days after his wife.
i heard that his doctor said he had the heart of a young man. (the bereavement counselor told us this)
who says people can't die from a broken heart?
I can easily think of 10 couples I know of who died within 6 months of each other. I had an aunt and uncle who died within a year of each other. Johnny Cash died something like 4 months after his wife June died. Sometimes the living partner never recovers from the grief and just don't want to live. It's so sad, but on the other hand, I'm happy for them because, depending on what you believe, they can be together again.

I'm not a nurse yet, but with almost all of the deaths of a loved one that I have seen (the couples that have been together for more than 40 years) the spouse usually goes in less than a year. The only couple that I can think of that is the exception are my grandparents. My grandmother will be gone for 2 years in Sept. and my grandpa is still with us, even thou he is waiting to die. The whole family thinks that the only reason he is still w/ us is because of my boys. They are the world to him and they were the world to my grandma.
So I truely believe in someone dying from a broken heart.

After I had surgery on my left foot, I was at my orthopods office for my first dressing change. While I was on the exam table, the receptionist came back to report a phone call. It was the mother of a 4 yo who had a cast on one of his forearms. The mother wanted to know if they could take the cast off and put something 'softer on' because - he was hitting his parents with the cast, and it hurt. :uhoh3:
I told the receptionist to go tell the mom that what she needed was a big stick!!

Aww... I bet they were so deeply in love. Although sad, thanks for sharing this with us.

my bils' parents were married for over 40 yrs when bils' mom died.
they had moved in w/their dtr, dh and grandchildren, selling their house and all of its' contents.
they did this, to help out with 'the kids' (their 1st of grandchildren)
they held hands every single day of their marriage.
i've known my bil since 1971 and knew his parents very well, so observed firsthand the closeness and powerful friendship they shared.
when she died, everyone worried he quickly follow.
he's still alive, 85 and going strong.
still lives in the same house, grandkids all grown up.
now a proud and devoted great-grandpa.
so yes, some do stay here on Gods' green earth, and carry on the torch.

That doesn't beat the mother that waited three hours to get a prescription for a $2.50 bottle of liquid motrin for her child so that 'medicaid would pay for it'.
Clue: they don't.
Boy was she indignant.
I didn't bother to point out that the single dose the child got in the ED (for a 100.0 temp) had already cost taxpayers 100x the cost of a bottle. Or, that a bottle would only be 1/6 the cost of her nail job, or 1/25th the cost of her hair 'do.
