I have been reading so many negative things about being a nurse on here it is worrying me. I am just getting started. I will start PCT classes in Jan. and then I was going to further my career in nursing. I just registered for this site a few days ago but all the negativity is scaring me. Is it really always that awful being a nurse?

don’t be worried... if this is something you really want to do, then go for it. don’t base your life on other people's experience. :nono:also don’t let other people’s experience keep you away from something you really want to do. decide for yourself if this is something you want to do or not. this decision should be based on your perception not others. i am not saying it will be easy but wanting something with all your heart will get you to your destination. :) do volunteer work it won’t be the same but still it will put you in the hospital setting. this will put you in direct contact with patients and nurses and talk to them. find out if this is where you belong or not. good luck with what ever you decide to do in life. :)

I really freaked myself out about being a nurse too when I first found this web site. I have decided to not read the things that were freaking me out! I have since talked to some IRL Nurses that I work with and have realized its not ALWAYS cleaning up Sh*t and getting puked on and all the other really really gross stuff.
If it has always been a dream for you, it will pay off to continueto pursue your dream!

You know I am only in my first semester of NS. So far I have seen and dealt with a lot of poop and other body fluids. Somehow it doesn't bother me...I actually find joy in cleaning up those that cannot do it for themselves. So far I have had very nice patients who are grateful for the attention I give them. My fear is the day when I am a full fledge RN and do not have the time to devote to my patients basic care needs and when the responsibility for their entire care will fall on me with out my instructor or primary nurse to turn to. Will I still enjoy nursing then??? I worry....

What's important is that you follow your heart and not someone's elses. You have to be committed to what ever it is you want to do whether it is nursing or some other profession, they all require commitment and all will have people to harp on the pros and cons, you have to go for what rings true with you.

I love to read all the negative comments about nursing on this website, it actually gives me time to think if nursing is what I really want to do. You will have issues with any job in any industry, nursing in particular is just more stressful and the work hour is crazy, but you really never know until you are in the field. Everyone's feeling about things are different, but I am sure all the bad experiences we hear here will somehow find it's way to us, so, just need to focus and find ways to deal with it.
If hospital does not work for you, go to small clinic, if that doesn't work, go to school, you can work in just any places as a nurse. I am sure everyone will find their niche.

If you joined allteachers.com, alllawyers.com, allpsychologists.com, etc. you'll see the same things. You'll see the good, bad, and down right dirty in all professions. The "vent" threads are eye-opening and sometimes bust any myths you have about nursing. The nursing profession is hard work, whether for school or on the job. If you're scared, address and tackle the areas you're apprehensive about. If nursing is still your desire, you'll press ahead.

OP: I had the same concerns. I am not even in NS yet, but just finishing my last 2 pre-req classes. I also just joined a couple of weeks ago. However, I have read thread in which so many hate nursing and wish they had never done it, and then I read threads i which many love being a nurse and couldn't imagine doing any thing else. So I have decided to just not read the negative sights. I will volunteer, pay special attention in clinicals and hopefully never regret my choices. This is something I have always wanted to do. I will not let the words of others, and I have to assume many comments are made in the heat of the moment, crush my dreams before they even begin. Since this is a passion I have always had I will push on. Life is what we make of it, and if in the end I decide I do not like nursing after all I will gain more education in some other field and move on. But, I am willing to take my chances.

When I first joined this site, I felt the same way you do. But you have to remember that this is a place where current Nurses can come to vent and have that support from other Nurses. There were many times where if someone would comment about how horrible nursing is, I would really question if I'm making the right decision. Theres no doubt in my mind now. I don't let all of that venting about nursing bring me down. I know that nursing is in my heart, and thats that. Dont let other people discourage you from doing what you want to do in life. Sure, there are going to be days that arent as good as others..but thats every job. You have to learn to take whats thrown your way, and make the best of it. Some days thats going to hard, some days its going to be easy. I know I'm not a Nurse, but I work in a nursing home, and it all pretty much comes down to the way you look at things. If you look at things negatively, you're going to hate what you do no matter what it is. If Nursing is something you genuinely want to do (not because its just a 2-year program, or a quick degree to good money, or a stable job). If you do it for those reasons and those reasons only, you're going to hate your job. But if Nursing is in your blood, you wont let anyone stop you or discourage you from pursuing your dreams. Good luck!!

Hey… I too am new to this site and have come across many negative comments. However, when you really think about it, you’re always going to have a little negativity thrown your way no matter where you go. All you can do is not allow it to sway you and what you are setting out to accomplish. I’ll be finishing up my PCT program in Dec, starting extern in Jan and moving forward with my prerequisites for NS in the spring.

When I first came to this site, I thought the same thing. But then I had to realize that this is site where people let all of their frustrations out to others that can understand what they are going through at that time. Nursing is not for everyone; and hospital nursing or LTC nursing is not for everyone. The one good thing about the nursing field is that you can sit at a desk doing case management, you can run the floors of a hospital, you can have the convenience of an MD's office hours, etc. If you really want to be a nurse, you will love it! If your heart is not in it, it will be disappointing and frustrating just as it is with any job you hate. I just got accepted into NS for Spring 2011 and I am excited!! I have a been a medical assistant for 6 yrs but wanted to be a nurse long before that!! I just remind myself that there will always be "The good, the bad and the ugly!" Good luck wherever the road leads you, but I really hope you follow your heart! :heartbeat

Read the thread about how the Stage IV cancer patient decided that she needed to get married NOW and the whole nursing staff put together an impromptu wedding in a matter of hours and then all of the staff & people on the floor attended the wedding bedside. All the negative posts in the world can't counter-act the way that post made me feel about being a nurse. Find an image or anecdote that just encapsulates your motivations in a few simple phrases or images and hold on to that. I think we will all need it as our educational path gets difficult. I don't care how may negative posts there are on this board, I know for me that the end will justify the effort!
