Yes, I discard mine after 30 days. I usually call or leave a message with parents telling them a new cartridge is needed.

Yes. You need to discard. Just make the parent aware.
Do you send it back with the child or is it better if I discard.....and how do you discard it properly

i send it back. One parent said they wanted to keep track of how much was being used at school - fine, sure whatever - they can do with it what they want. But leave me out of it.

I agree with Flare...regardless of whether it's expired it belongs to the parent; unless of course they tell you to toss it.
If the parent requests it, I send it home. If not, I put it in the sharps container.
after i posted, i thought about it and realized that my older students that i have keep track of their own supplies and just over see just come in and change their own and usually just toss their own cartridges from their pens. I think they usually use the trash - i'll remind them to use the sharps next time

At our junior high, our kids carry their pens with them. There are many after school activities, going to friends houses, etc. They carry a pouch with all of their supplies and use the pen at home and at school, so it never lasts that long. whenever we throw away an empty pen, it just goes in the trash.
