  1. 1. Do you receive the flu vaccine yearly? Yes. I have asthma and am IgA deficient, so the benefit definitely outweighs any risks. 2.Does your employer have a mandatory influenza vaccination policy as a condition of employment? If yes, where do you work? Yes. The only exceptions are medical and religious. It is a medium sized hospital in eastern North Carolina. 3. What concerns do you have about the flu vaccine? The recent lack of a good match to the circulating virus. 4. Do you know of anyone who has been released from their job because they did not get the flu vaccine? Not currently
  2. I don't even remember having a school nurse, and I have asthma!
  3. I'm going to work at a special needs camp for 6 weeks. Really looking forward to the experience, but dreading being away from my family that long.

I had a high school student my first year as a school nurse who had them . He would give the appearance of having tonic-clinic seizures without any EEG changes. He also had other mental illness issues including depression and episodes of acute psychosis including hallucinations. They usually occurred when he was under stress.
  5. Just try being a school nurse. Teacher appreciation week is right before, and they get a whole weeks worth of goodies and meals. Nurses week comes along and I get a logoed umbrella for the umpteenth year.

Yes. You need to discard. Just make the parent aware.

Summer camp nursing. If you have kids, they might could go for free, depending on the camp.
  8. If you join NASN you get the Journal of School Nursing as part of your membership. It may also be linked to your state association. Plus NASN is our advocacy organization.
  9. As in, when a student says or shows you something surprising, disgusting, etc, don't let it show on your face.
  10. Be ready for anything, and I do mean anything. I second OP about the quiet ones. They go south quick. Keep crackers, juice, and 15 carb snacks on hand. The day your diabetic's blood sugar is 30, they won't have any. Finally, to quote on of my nursing instructors, "Fix your face!"
  11. Is your school social worker involved? In situations like this I would appraise them of the situation and perhaps do a home visit. We have even gone and picked up the parent so they could sign the child out and then drive them both home.
  12. Even worse is the panic if a child has HEAD LICE!!!! Do you know how many teachers have had to tell me about "super lice" on the news? I have seriously been asked to screen an entire school (1000 students) for one case of lice. Teachers are more blasé about kids running 104 fevers than head lice.
  13. Right now 4 elementary schools Pre-k through 5th, but have done all grades.
  14. We have discussed this with hash oil being legalized in NC for intractable seizures. The way the law is written here, hash oil can only be given by a "caregiver" which is defined in the law as a parent/guardian who is registered with the state. Our state Dept of Public Instruction attorney has determined that we do not meet those requirements and cannot accept orders or administer hash oil in the schools. However, if the parent wants to come to the school and give it, they can.
