Hi,

Im currently doing my bachelor of nursing to become a midwife although I'm not sure it's for me. I am so passionate about the midwifery side although I have zero interest in becoming a nurse. My area I live I can not be a midwife only so that's not an option.

im not interested in any of the content so far, I feel so bored learning it. I can't stand wounds, blood ect. I don't want to work as a nurse and now I'm just thinking am I doing the wrong thing doing it to become a midwife? Did anyone ever feel like this?

No one here knows you better than you know yourself. If you're just getting started, maybe you should bail. If you're almost finished, maybe you should tough it out. That way, you'll at least have the option to get a return on your investment.

I am only first year. I just feel like all the other students seem so passionate about it and are really enjoying the course. I don't know if it's normal for me to not be liking it or not interested in it

Specializes in CCU, SICU, CVICU.

Some nursing students are way over the top about their "call" to nursing "I WAS BORN TO BE A NURSE BECAUSE MY MOM AND GRANDMA WERE NURSES

Ok, I'm done being an ass. Serious now:

If you have your heart set on OB, then everything else will probably bore you or be of no interest. I, for example, would have rather gouged my eyes out than sit through more disgusting maternity lectures and do OB rotations. You can't stand blood, I can't stand anything pregnancy related. It's just preference. Try to tough it out until you can at least get to the OB lectures and maybe things will change. The great thing about nursing is that you can have specialties. And sometimes, the things you hate end up being not so bad in the long run.

And FWIW, my husband and I are both nurses and my husband kind of hates being a nurse a lot of the time. He is a fantastic and patient nurse, and patients adore him... but he isn't super passionate about it; he's just good at it. You don't have to convince yourself that nursing is your "calling" to be a good nurse.

Someone commented they are not a fan of PB... Neither am I! Would rather gouge my eyes out than deal with maternity of any kind as well! I don't even want the experience of motherhood myself.

You said you don't like to dress wounds, etc. What is it you don't like about the wounds? If it's gore, then you might not even like maternity. If it's doing the task of dressing rather than "thinking" or "talking", you might not be cut out for nursing and the "nursing" aspect of midwifery. How about medical school? Or if you don't like gore at all, there is genetic counseling in which you help parents plan and deal with possible birth defects etc.

Yes you could wait and see if you start liking maternity lectures/placement. However, not every student gets a maternity placement, I didn't. And secondly you might have a really hard time finding a OB job and need to work in another area of nursing till you secure one. So if you're going to continue with nursing and all the money that comes with getting your degree, you should be able stand other areas of nursing. I wanted to NICU nursing since before nursing school, but in my area it is very competitive to get into, even just to get a placement in. If I hadn't gotten one I would of been happy to work in cardiac, surgical, ect.

Specializes in Med/Surg, LTACH, LTC, Home Health.

There will be blood and other excrements in midwife land....I'm just saying..

I have no clue what the requirements are to be a midwife.

I cannot imagine being bored with a BSN curriculum. Seems like you are "bored" with any information not conducive to your " passion".

If you have done your research and a BSN is the starting point, either suck it up.. or go elsewhere.
