Not smart enough to be a doctor?

Published

Grr- I also frequent a parenting site, and was appalled at a mother's thread. She was asking for information about becomming a neonatal nurse. Then followed with "I'd love to be an OB dr, but D*mn I'm not smart enough"

Really??? But you feel you are "smart enough" to take care of critically ill babies??

I actually finished pre-med ( 4 years) it was hard but doable.I loved Gross Anatomy, histology, genetics, Immunology. I decided to go for nursing, it takes less years to complete. If I don't like nursing, all I have to do it study for MCAT and go to med school. Many people that I know hate chemistry and math.I used to HATE chemistry, I got a C on my first chem class in college. It was horrible. I decided to retake the class, I spend lots and lots of time studying and spent lots of hours going to see my professor for help. He said," I am going to make you love chemistry."....I got an A+. Then I realized, I got the C in first place because I studied the week before the test and reading the book only once. Now I finally get it.My point is that, everybody is smart enough or can be smart enough to be a doctor. If you study anything is possible.

Specializes in NICU, ER, OR.

well, i am in the minority, i suppose. i know i could go through med school. i just had the two little things lacking, years back, called "confidence and self esteem".... lol i barely thought i was good enough to be an RN--but now at 38, going to med school, residency, and raising an 8 year old seems a little too outlandish to take on.... but i did always want to be a doctor--- and i do think i would make a better MD than an RN.... but anyways......

Specializes in ob/gyn med /surg.

i wouldn't want to be a DR , my brother in law is a DR and he dosen't get a moments peace... i'm to smart to become a Dr...

:yeah: Same here!

I have NO desire to become a doctor.

Specializes in M/S, MICU, CVICU, SICU, ER, Trauma, NICU.

Is it weird I love chemistry, physics AND calculus? I call it extreme GEEKNESS. BUT I LOVE THEM!!

But I still wanted to be a nurse...just because I wanted to be.

Media Media Media as someone has already mentioned. During L&D rotation we saw the doctor as the baby was about to come and long enough to get the mother squared away (sewn up etc).

And if I was smarter, I would stay away from all of healthcare.
