You guys are freaking hilarious! I may just have to come hang out here with the cool kids. It makes me glad I work with the unconscious patient population. And why aren't all of you over on the blue side?

My dad told me recently after taking his girlfriend-if that's what you call her-for eye surgery that he told the nurse that his daughter "used to be a nurse", then asked if I wanted to go back to the hospital full-time if they would let me work as a nurse.
To which I became defensive and explained that I am STILL a nurse with RN behind my name. Why people think we aren't nurses is beyond me....
I love the school nurse threads, makes my day go by faster.

Cheesealicious, if you will.
Tsk, tsk . . . no such thing as NETY and you know it young lady. Mean girl pink, eh . . . I have pink scrubs my daughter wore in Vietnam (the volunteers wore pink) but she was tiny so I'd never fit into them. I visited one elementary school campus yesterday to bring some Christmas candy - people acted like they missed me! Was kind of weird to see my cubby with the new nurse's name on it and see it filled with little Christmas presents. I'm with the nurses here who say don't let anyone tell you that your assessment isn't valid because you are a (fake) school nurse. What's for lunch?

Our retiring Hispanic HHA is bringing her homemade tamales, real refried beans, real homemade salsa, and probably store-bought tortilla chips to our IDT meeting today.
Too bad we can't have margaritas!
(Maybe I can find some Virgin ones . . . )

This is true. A fellow school nurse called me very upset and almost in tears the other day because a parent who is a hospital nurse told her she wasn't a "real nurse" because she was a school nurse and not a hospital nurse, and that her assessment was worthless. That nurse had 16 years of ICU experience and took a severe pay cut to come to school nursing and is a RN, BSN. Sadly, this is often how we are treated by other nurses. What a lot of them don't realize is that we are all highly experienced RN's, and most of us left bedside nursing to come to our positions.
I know not everyone agrees but I've always thought starting out as a bedside nurse was a great jumping board. (Not any specific floor - med surg, tele, ortho, etc, or peds is a good lead in to working with little ones in other areas.)
Yes, the hospital routinely kicked my butt. It was stressful and difficult and took years off my life. BUT it gave me the opportunity to do assessments galore and learn what is and isn't normal. I had backup and other nurses, both more and less experienced than I, to bounce ideas off. A healthcare provider could be reached when needed and I learned so much.
To me, the thought of being in Home Health, School Nursing, or Camp Nursing (or LTC) as a total newbie is scary, but again I know that not everyone agrees and plenty of new nurses have managed to flourish without hospital experience.
It's just that nurses in these areas have a lot of autonomy and responsibility and are ALONE. Even with five years experience I'd be nervous as heck to have your jobs!
All this to say that if COURSE y'all are the real deal! Navigating the politics of the school and staff while advocating for the student, trying to avoid the landmines that are the crazy parents, and often being the only healthcare professional in the building is pretty darn real.
I'm amazed at the medical complexity so many students have nowadays and disheartened that nurses are often not given the support and assistance -or respect - needed to do the job.
Thanks for all you do, and your freaking awesomeness and sense of humor!
I hope you all enjoy your holidays. ((Group hug))
Flare, I am home and heading out to do errands- are we still wearing Pink?
I ventured out to some other threads and came scurrying back.
I's scared.
Will definitely get in trouble if I respond to some posters the way I want - and be accused of NETY and NENS (Nurses Eat Nursing Students) and not being "compassionate" enough to be a nurse because I don't blow sunshine and poop glittery rainbows.

Hey. That's not fair. I still have kids in school for another 50 minutes. Can you keep your pink shirts on for a little while longer. You know that it can be lonely to be the only nurse in this job!! Don't want to leave out our gentlemen...can you keep your red shirts on??
i had mine on until i got home and argued with a salesman - now i'm jeans and a gray hoodie
I wore pink crystal earrings. Still have them on. :)
