Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) Spring 2021

Published

Hello All,

We are the Advisors and Counselors at the Medical Education Campus with Northern Virginia Community College. We will attempt to answer your questions about the upcoming Spring 2021 Nursing admissions process.

Application website

https://www.nvcc.edu/medical/apply/

Application Period

July 20 to September 20

Entry Requirments

  • All course work must be final by the program deadline of September 20, 2020. Course work that
  • Ends after the deadline of September 20, 2020, will not count
  • has not transferred AND posted to your NOVA account from an external school Including other VCCS schools, will not count.
    • For example, you submit your GMU transcript on September 20, 2020, and your transfer credit post-September 31, your applicants would have been rejected.

Common reasons applications don't make it past the initial review for eligibility

  1. The student did not take a course listed as an entry requirement
  2. The student took a course listed as an entry requirement but never transferred the credit to NOVA via the official transfer credit process.
  3. The student had a C- or did not take a required high school level course
  4. The student never provided their high school transcript with their application.

We are still waiting on the final word for the ATI TEAS exam. Check our website for an update on July 17.

  1. GPA of 2.5 at NOVA or if you have never taken NOVA courses a 2.5 at your most recent school
  2. Completion of ENG 111 or higher
  3. Completion of SDV 101 or SDV 100
  4. Completion of BIO 141
  5. Completion fo PSY 230
  6. Completion of Open elective [ BIO 150 and BIO 142 can not be used as open electives]
  7. Provide high school transcript-
    1. If your high school was in a different country you will need a course by course evaluation by either www.ece.org or www.ierf.org.
    2. All students regardless of the level of education are required to provide their high school transcripts
    3. not doing so will automatically flag your application and lead to a rejection
  8. Show that you took and passed in high school or college with a C or better [not C-]. If you took some other science course in place of Chemistry for example it is likely that it will not count.
    1. BIology
    2. Algebra
    3. Chemistry

How will you be ranked

Ranking criteria are listed on the information session(

and in the nursing brochure (https://www.nvcc.edu/academics/divisions/nursing/_docs/nsg-brochure.pdf) ) Please carefully review these documents and follow all steps to submit a complete application.

Alternatively you could retake some of the pre-reqs to get an A and boost your chances for the next application cycle if you do not get in.

Yes, GMU has an extensive list of pre reqs if you want to apply to their BSN program. I did not apply due to Mason factoring classes that have been retaken due to GPA, but if you did well in the pre reqs the first time I say go for it.

Mason requires you to take MASONCORE classes in order to be eligible to apply. I'm finishing up the rest of the requirements for Mason this semester in case I don't get in again at NOVA. I already finished the classes available for General Studies so I added Social Sciences/Psychology so that I could finish the MASONCORE classes and have financial aid cover it for this semester.

Step 1 of the nursing application review is done. If you have met all the entry requirements, you should have gotten an email explaining the rest of the steps. You may be selected to provide additional documentation to confirm your domicile/residency for the next step. (Step 2).

The final step is the ranking of all eligible students. Virginia Residents that live in the NOVA Service Area (counties where NOVA has a campus or office), for example, are ranked in group one, and students are then ranked by their score. The department will contact students and offer them a spot (Step 3). All other students (that have met the entry requirements) will be notified that the program is full.

Example: The highest-ranked DC resident will always be ranked lower than the lowest-ranked Virginia Resident in NOVA's Service area.

Hello, this is my first time on here. I applied to nova’s nursing program for the Fall 2020 and was rejected because there was too many applicants. I have A’s in Bio 141, Psy 230, Bio 142 literally I have all A’s. I still got rejected. I applied for Fall semester and was told my application was incomplete due to not taking Algebra in High School. Now I am taking Math 154 to full fill the math. I am honestly about to have enough credits to graduate from Nova. I am just going to apply to GMU at this point. I’m not sure if I will try to apply again for Fall 2021. Sorry I’m probably just ranting but I really want to get into nursing if I’m rejected again it will be the third time:( Good Luck too all of you:)

It would be nice to have the decisions come out before NOVA opens up the registration for the Spring so we know whether we are in the program and taking nursing classes or need to sign up for other classes.

We recommend you enroll in whatever Spring courses you had planned to. If accepted you can adjust your schedule accordingly.

Thank you so much for the update! It’s really comforting to know where we are in the process!

Looking back at last year’s thread, it looks like this step was completed around Oct 4 last year, and decisions were announced three weeks later on the 25th. Major kudos to the staff for working through these so quickly with nearly 3x the number of applications!

I would recommend applying to Mason if you have the credits. That was you would have a BSN in another years.

Thank you for your reply, yeah it looks like that would be the better thing to do at this point. Especially since most hospitals do require a BSN now. I may apply to both Mason and Nova and see what happens. I just don’t want to be waiting for years to get into a program.  Mason’s application should be opening up soon.

In addition there are lots of other programs worth looking into as well. My backup school is Reynolds community college since they have a RN program.

It might be a bit faster this year. so far the process is about 3 weeks ahead of schedule. Unless something comes up it should be pretty quick,

Hey! I'm considering about applying as well in case I get rejected again. Just make sure you have all of the MASONCORE courses done before the application deadline because that is part of their requirements.

Yeah I have almost all except 12 credits of the Masoncore done. All of their pre req are done as of this semester. The core courses are required to be completed by the end of the Spring semester before starting. I plan on attending an information session for Mason in November. I spoke to someone at Mason who said my application is strong but I would still like to be accepted to Nova.
