Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) Spring 2021

Published

Hello All,

We are the Advisors and Counselors at the Medical Education Campus with Northern Virginia Community College. We will attempt to answer your questions about the upcoming Spring 2021 Nursing admissions process.

Application website

https://www.nvcc.edu/medical/apply/

Application Period

July 20 to September 20

Entry Requirments

  • All course work must be final by the program deadline of September 20, 2020. Course work that
  • Ends after the deadline of September 20, 2020, will not count
  • has not transferred AND posted to your NOVA account from an external school Including other VCCS schools, will not count.
    • For example, you submit your GMU transcript on September 20, 2020, and your transfer credit post-September 31, your applicants would have been rejected.

Common reasons applications don't make it past the initial review for eligibility

  1. The student did not take a course listed as an entry requirement
  2. The student took a course listed as an entry requirement but never transferred the credit to NOVA via the official transfer credit process.
  3. The student had a C- or did not take a required high school level course
  4. The student never provided their high school transcript with their application.

We are still waiting on the final word for the ATI TEAS exam. Check our website for an update on July 17.

  1. GPA of 2.5 at NOVA or if you have never taken NOVA courses a 2.5 at your most recent school
  2. Completion of ENG 111 or higher
  3. Completion of SDV 101 or SDV 100
  4. Completion of BIO 141
  5. Completion fo PSY 230
  6. Completion of Open elective [ BIO 150 and BIO 142 can not be used as open electives]
  7. Provide high school transcript-
    1. If your high school was in a different country you will need a course by course evaluation by either www.ece.org or www.ierf.org.
    2. All students regardless of the level of education are required to provide their high school transcripts
    3. not doing so will automatically flag your application and lead to a rejection
  8. Show that you took and passed in high school or college with a C or better [not C-]. If you took some other science course in place of Chemistry for example it is likely that it will not count.
    1. BIology
    2. Algebra
    3. Chemistry

How will you be ranked

Ranking criteria are listed on the information session(

and in the nursing brochure (https://www.nvcc.edu/academics/divisions/nursing/_docs/nsg-brochure.pdf) ) Please carefully review these documents and follow all steps to submit a complete application.

Another strategy is apply to other RN programs and transfer into NOVA if not accepted. I got accepted into Reynolds community college RN program for Spring 2021, ultimately I prefer to attend NOVA's program, but if I do not get in I hope to attend Reynolds for a semester or 2, and then apply to transfer into Novas nursing program. Wish me luck!

I am worried about 800+ plus applicants.

I felt safe because I have a perfect application, I have an A in Bio141 and Psy 230, and all 4 coreqs completed. But I am worried how many of those 800 had the same application as me as me. For the 80-100 slots open, how will they decide if more applicants than slots open get all A's and have all coreqs done,

I got rejected last semester, so I retook classes and I am sure I am not the only one.

I'm in the same situation as you. All A's and 4 coreqs completed (with all As but I know they don't look at the grades, only completed). I think the question came up last cycle about how they rank people if they have more applicants with all requirements but it was never answered. I think something needs to change if the TEAS keep getting waived.

At this point with 800+ applicants for 80-100 slots (last cycle only took 60) I will never get in!

Guys what can we do, I know 800 plus applications is kind of degrading, but we all can only do our best! Who knows maybe 600 of them are weak applications we don’t know, there’s enough stress in this world let’s not get discouraged. Do your best! Stay busy taking classes that you will need later on, and be hopeful but also  prepared for all outcomes. I was really stressed but now I think about I’m eventually going to get this goal done! Just have to be patient and do my best! It will eventually pay off! Good luck to you all

What other classes are there if we have all 4 coreqs done? The only thing I have left are the nursing classes.

We anxiously wait LOL.

Same! 4.0, 4/4 co-reqs completed, and I live in Alexandria. With a “perfect” application I felt cautiously optimistic, but now I’m more cautious than optimistic LOL.

I have to think though that the increase is due to people pursuing nursing in response to the pandemic, in which case there’s no way that people have been able to get a lot of the co-reqs under their belt during the Summer session. My guess is that there are a lot of applications with only BIO 141 and PSY 230 done.

I totally get it - the circumstances this year are so unique - but man! The stress is REAL! I have my fingers and toes crossed for you all! ❤️

I do feel very optimistic about getting in. If I received a rejection letter I would grill the nursing department on why I got rejected since there is literally nothing I could do to improve my application.

You have done everything you can do. If you don't get in, I think it would be because they had more than 100 applications like yours. The question remains, how do they determine who gets in at that point? Do they draw names out of a hat (just kidding, but seriously, how?)

Well according to the facebook page decisions will come out Mid-October through Early November

It would be nice to have the decisions come out before NOVA opens up the registration for the Spring so we know whether we are in the program and taking nursing classes or need to sign up for other classes.

Does anyone here have backup nursing programs there applying too?

I would enroll in the classes anyway, and drop them based on if you got an acceptance letter.

I was rejected last semester despite my GPA and having 3/4 of the coreqs done, but I finished any course I could take under General studies after taking BIO150. I ended up having to add an additional major to stay at NOVA hoping to get in for the Spring so that financial aid could still help.
