North Lake/El Centro - Fall '06!

Published

Congrats to all of us that were accepted to the nursing program at either campus for Fall '06!!!!

:balloons: :balloons: :balloons: :balloons: :balloons: :balloons:

I'm going to be at the NLC campus! See you in June for orientation!

Also, congrats for making it to the next semester to all new 2nd - 4th semester NLC/ECC student nurses & congrats to the graduates! :balloons:

Good luck to everyone!

I would love to be a school nurse.

Once I was asked to sub in the school nurse's office when there was an emergency because I was a medical assistant. :chuckle

When I was in high school, school districts only hired BSN's. Now, schools aren't wanting to/can't pay, therefore, some only hire LVNs. :(

Specializes in ICU, ER, HH, NICU, now FNP.

I thought they passed a law that said each campus had to have an RN?

Is that a new law?

Maybe Mansfield has an RN 'overseer' & that's how they get away with it? I don't know. ....Maybe they have a rotating RN?

.....Or...maybe I'm completely wrong & they have both. lol

It may depend too on whether or not there are any kids with diabetes, g-tubes catheters etc. I don't recall the details. And it may be imposed by an individual district - it just may be that the districts I happen to be familiar with require an RN on each campus. DISD employs a LOT of nurses!

Specializes in OR Internship starting in Jan!!.

I just wonder if I can really do the RN-BSN bridge while working full time and get it done in a year. I've always been too impatient for my own good. heh.

As for school nursing, I think it would be hard for me to do. I remember when I was in HS, my best friend had a really bad home life. The school nurse noticed some bruises and the law requires she notify authorities. But, my friend was 16. She'd already gone through it once, and was basically told that she was too old to be removed from her family. So, if the nurse informed the police, then the cops show up and tell her home to lay off, and my friend just gets abused when they leave. That kind of stuff is just sad and I don't think I could take it.

Jaxia,

I wouldn't do that - I would stay right where you are. I use to date a guy who is a Respiratory Therapist who does agency work here in Dallas. He goes to alot of hospitals and he told me that he has many RN friends at different hospitals and they tell him that TWU new grad RN's (not RN-BSN) have the WORST clinical skills upon graduation of all the programs in this area. He said that Brookhaven's grads have the best and EC grads have 2nd best. Personally, I want a solid foundation.

Amy

I guess I need to start updating my wishlist :D

I had a crazy few days where I thought I might take 18 hours this fall to try to get into a BSN program at TWU. I found out that it takes a 3.8 overall to get in though, so I would have to take Chem, Micro, Stats, Nutrition and a Fine arts class and get an A in all of them.

I think I'll just focus on the RN-BSN later!

Brianna,

Is this what you did (the private loan)? If so, may I PM you? I would like more information about this.

Amy

If you are going to need a loan that will help to cover living expenses, etc. I would get a private loan (I recommend Salliemae Tuition Answer Loan because the check is mailed to you) and make sure you get enough money to last you for 2 years. Also, apply for the loan while you're still working because your chances of qualifying are better and you can most likely get whatever amount you need.

Jaxia,

I don't think I would want to be a school nurse either because of the stuff you described. It would just make me so :angryfire to see something like this and know that probably nothing will change. I'm also sure this kind of stuff happens alot more than we want to think.

I think you'll see this type of situation in any type of nursing/counseling, etc. At 16, that girl should have been emancipated. I can't believe they allowed/made her to go back. (Unless she told the police a story to make them think she wasn't abused out of fear of her parents.)

Then again, I can't believe someone would abuse their child in the first place. :angryfire :angryfire :angryfire

Hey! I got my uniform today via UPS. No, I haven't put it on yet. lol

I may later on. :chuckle

Hope everyone's classes are going well. I'll be glad when Stats is over with. :uhoh3:

Fun,

Did you get just the top and labcoat or pants also? Seems like someone mentioned awhile back that we could get our pants elsewhere as long as they were black...is that correct?

How is Stats going? Is it THAT bad? Do you think you spent more time with Stats or College Algebra? I'm taking Stats this Fall.

I ordered the whole set. You only spend $15 on pants, $25 on the top, and $27 on the lab coat. (Add $6 for S&H, for a total of $73.)

Now, I did order an additional top ($25+$6) after the fact, and will probably get pants elsewhere if I see I need them. However, you're looking at $15+$6 if you order the pants through this company at a different time, but probably around the same if you buy them elsewhere.

As far as stats.....So far, it's relatively easy. I used the course tutor center phone line today to ask about 3 questions, but I know how to do those problems now. :balloons: (Simple!)

Taking it online is working out great. There's no telling how difficult an instructor would make it. (Some seem to confuse you more when they try to explain things in class.)

I made a 100 on the first test, 95 on the TI-83 project, and my 2nd test is Monday.

Really, I spent too much time trying to figure out how to do those 3 problems on my own, so I have to speed up a little. Ch 4 homework is due by 10:59 Tuesday. lol

You shouldn't have a problem, whether it be on campus or online. (FYI, I'm taking the 4 credit online course through Cedar Valley, but I'm sure the 3 credit online classes aren't too different.)

Just make sure you take the MATH stats, if your taking it for nursing. :)
