I'm going to be at the NLC campus! See you in June for orientation!
Also, congrats for making it to the next semester to all new 2nd - 4th semester NLC/ECC student nurses & congrats to the graduates! :balloons:
Good luck to everyone!
epocrates has a free version of PDA drug guide - it might be just what you need.
I thought that was for Palm Os, is there a Pocket PC version? I'll have to check it out.
I know the 'real' version is quite a pricey thing.
Amy -- I'm doing it on July 10th. Yep, it is the last thing I need to do other than get my transcripts and stuff together. This is the place I am going through: http://www.cpr-first-aid.com/ She was really willing to work with me when I called and asked for a different time other than what was listed on the site.
Fun -- Woo! Congrats! I cannot wait to hear all about your PDA.
Jaxia,
I'm glad I asked you about your CPR class! That site is cheaper and works better for my schedule than what I was going to do at Brookhaven. I was going to have to take a vacation day from work just to get CPR certified, which I really didn't want to do! I'm glad I haven't paid for the Brookhaven class and now I can cancel my vacation day! Thanks a TON! When you talked to the lady did she say anything about needing any book(s)? I know Brookhaven and El Centro's CPR classes both required books.

I have a 50% coupon fer the "pricey" version - let me know if you want it - yes it is for pocket PC too.
Thanks. :) (I received your PM also.)
I've looked at the website. epocrates.com shows "more than 3,300 brand and generic drugs", but fadavis.com says "almost 5000 trade and generic drugs".
Is there a major reason you prefer the epocrates over Davis Drug Guide? Do you have the full essentials program?
I have downloaded the trial versions of Davis's Drug Guide for Nurses, 10th Edition for PDA, Davis's Laboratory and Diagnostic Tests for PDAs, MedSurg Notes for PDA, & Taber's Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary, 20th Edition for PDA.
So, would epocrates essentials be better & just get/download a med. dictionary, or would going the above route be better? (OR....does epocrates have a medical dictionary in the essentials program?....I didn't see that on the site.)
I appreciate any opinions!!! :balloons:

I wanted to go eat at McDonalds just because it's a wireless hotspot. :chuckle (We didn't though...lol)
I'm going to love it....I've spent so much time looking at the trial versions of the programs I've downloaded. haha
Amy/Jaxia/anyone else....just an FYI...I took my CPR at Arlington Memorial Hospital & paid, I think, $45...it came with the book.
It was for new certifications & renewals....all the same price. :balloons:
I use both epocrates (because I like the calculators and some of the other features) and lexi-comp (because the drug information is much more extensive) on my PDA. I have the complete packages for both. They werent cheap - Im still missing an arm and a leg - but you wouldnt need the lexi in all honesty that I have.
Bear in mind that the davis guide probably is counting herbals in that 5000 number.
Play with them both and see which one you prefer would be my suggestion. Another site that you may find a sample one to try is http://www.micromedex.com

I'm sure herbals are included in the count.
Thanks again, I'll look at micromedex too.

Thanks, I'm looking at it now. I see it shows 2,900 drugs.
I guess, from what I'm understanding, I'll still need a Medical Dictionary with any of these.
I've downloaded thePC 'emulator' & now I'm going to check that out. :)
You can get Stedmans Medical Dictionary for the PDA at lexi.com for 35.00
http://www.lexi.com/lexistore/servlet/Controller?a=sca&t=CE
I like lexi's drug refs because they are fully referenced and very in depth. But I'm thinking for nursing students epocrates might actually be better because it wouldnt be an overwhelming amount of information.
I would download all the free products you can, use them for awhile and see what features you like or dislike. Then you can see if you can change or add certain features by getting the paid version or if you would have to switch to a different product to get what you need.
I see that epocrates does not have IV compatibility in the free version, but it does have it in the paid version. Epocrates also will calculate drug dosages right in the monograph instead of having to switch to a different calculator. That is VERY nice and is one of the biggest reasons I added epocrates to my PDA even though I already had Lexi. Lexi doesn't do that, but it does have far more in depth and detailed drug information which I need if I am the one signing for it.
You will find that HCA hospitals all have micromedex on their computers, most of the electronic medical record systems are tied to epocrates, and the pharmacy folks like lexi....confusing enough?
