Published

Congrats to all of us that were accepted to the nursing program at either campus for Fall '06!!!!

:balloons: :balloons: :balloons: :balloons: :balloons: :balloons:

I'm going to be at the NLC campus! See you in June for orientation!

Also, congrats for making it to the next semester to all new 2nd - 4th semester NLC/ECC student nurses & congrats to the graduates! :balloons:

Good luck to everyone!

Hey Fun!

I am so glad it went well for you! Sometimes the TBA teachers are the best! I had a TBA teacher for 1119 and she turned out to be the best teacher. I wonder when you will find out what hospital you will be in? You'll be able to adapt well to anywhere though!

Thanks Allison! :)

I figure if I hate the instructor, it'll be a challenge to learn more. (Ya know...be able to answer the questions thrown at me?) :lol2:

Really, I can't think of any teacher/instructor that I didn't like a little. It was always the substitutes that chapped my hide. :uhoh3:

Is the vis-a-vis pen a skinny black one? If so, I have one now. I bought more dry erase markers for my calendar board & it came with a free vis-a-vis marker. :balloons:

We're suppose to be registered by 3 PM Friday, but Pam said she didn't think they would have a site by then. Apparently the Dean, or Asst Dean one, is out of town. So, final decisions on the last hospital site will be made then.

That's a positive way to think about it! I hope it's not one that will chap your hide :(

I am so confused on where all of these teachers are going??? I'm sorry you didn't have Fields to choose from. I thought I just heard that she moved to 3rd or 4th semester at EC. Then there was another teacher who was supposed to move to NL but I don't know if she ever did.....I have a TBA teacher too so it will be fun for both of us :uhoh3:

Yeah the vis-a-vis is the skinny black one and it will be used plenty :)

Cool! ....Mark that off of my list of things to buy. :chuckle

They said they had some move over the summer...better job offers maybe? (Or just needing to work a hospital job b/c they don't get paid enough?) :uhoh3:

I'll be ok. It's only for about 4 months, right? :D

I feel like I am SOOOOOO out in the dark.

I heard Fields moved to a different semester. So....that choice is out.

Anyone know anything about Standfield? (...Although I didn't get his/her clinical.)

Is that suppose to be Stanfield? I heard her class at Northlake was cancelled. Anyways I had her last semester for clinical. If you want to know details PM me. I really did like her though.

I'm not sure....she may have moved. There's so many changes to our schedule made & to be made, it's all a mess.

She was on one of the other clinical site instructors, not the TBA site.

If there's anything I really should know, just in case, please do tell..LOL

I have just checked my schedule. My skills instructor is TBA and I have my skills lab and clinical scheduled on the same day. :uhoh21:

Hi guys,

I am in need of some advice, I apologize in advance if this post gets long. For you ladies and gents already in the North Lake/ El Centro program I need to know, How HARD is this program?

I went to El Centro a few years ago and got my Surg tech certificate. I also took pre-reqs and lots of classes at both schools. I know a few of the nursing professors at EC. For a year I watched the nursing studetns come out of check off, a few in tears. I know how "special" some of the staff at EC can be.

I have been accepted at a direct-entry MN (Master Of Nursing) program in Ohio. I can graduate quicker in that progrm, but the issue is the cost and scheduling. It will cost me $28,000 + living expenses. I have savings but I don't want to wipe it all out. Loans are not an option.

If I come back to Dallas, I can go to NL or EC. With my savings I can totally cover everything (tuition, fees, books, living expenses) out of pocket.

Another thing, in additon to taking nursing classes, I would like to take a few pre-reqs in DCCD I need for another degree. All my nursing prereqs are done and I would only be taking one extra 4 hour class per semester.

I am on a tight schedule and need to get these other classes along with the nursing degree in order to retain a scholarship in a very prestigious graduate training program I have been offered.

Not bragging, but I am a VERY good student. I love school and go all out with my studies. I do well with a full plate. I've taken 3 lab classes plus a regular class in one semester and gotten all A's. I've taken 21 hours a semester a few times.

So, is it possible to take other class while going through the EC/NL program? Would exceptional organization, excellent study skills and a quick brain keep me ahead of the game? How HARD is HARD?

Please help me out guys. Even if you are just starting out, I'd value your input. I am so torn and I really need advice.

Thanks

Sunny~

Whoa  , YOU are a great student. Congrats.

Has your living condition changed? Do you have anybody to take care after school (cook, feed, wash, clean, run errands)? Do you have some hours EVERY day to read your textbooks? Do you have to or want to work during school?

As I have seen in my class, people who had small children had a hard time (emotionally) during the semester because they couldn't spend enough time with them. And those who had to work did poorly on lecture tests because they never had enough time to read.

You have to keep up with every class and spend more time with your textbook than with your loved ones. As a lady at Funnie's orientation said this week 'Your life and soul belongs to El Centro while you are in the program'. ;)

Fun,

Glad you had a good time and got to meet some people. I just KNOW I am not going to know anyone when I go to mine. Does the clinical last ALL DAY (6:45 am - 7:15 pm)??? Seems like I read somewhere on allnurses that "it is useless to go to Monday clinical". Does anyone know why or ever of this is true?

Also, Fun, how is STATS going? Is it anything like College Algebra? Better or worse? If nothing changes I will be taking STATS this fall, plus another class. I wanted to take MIcro this fall but I don't think my work schedule can handle Micro and another class. So I am going to be able to breathe this fall (for 1 last semester) and take Micro next summer since I will be leaving my job in Jan.

Amy

"IF" the clinical time doesn't change, then it will be 6:45-7:15 on Tuesdays.

Time to get back to concentrating on STATS & Nursing Conversions. :monkeydance: :specs:

Sunny....wow...what a decision to have to make!

To finish with a Masters would be incredible! Then again, for myself, I would question MY ability. If you know you can handle it, then that wouldn't be a problem.

There will always be a chance that you could go to an RN-MSN program later, and actually have your employer pay for it, or part of it.

YOU can only decide what is best for YOU. I'm sure handling it won't be a problem, if you have managed with the other classes you've taken.

(Are you the one that was "out of town" and had a friend register for you?) ;) I wondered if that was for you.

AMY, don't be fooled. :) I expected to only know 1 person...a girl that was in my A&P 1 class that I knew got accepted. I ended up knowing 3, and meeting two others (Katie & Kendra) that I felt like I already knew. :monkeydance:

STATS is fine, but I've only completed chapters 1 & 2. :chuckle So far, it is SOOOOO much easier than Algebra! I know it'll probably get harder, but I think it's just a different thing than Algebra. FYI, a TI-83 or a TI-83 plus is required. (I bought a TI-83 on Ebay.) :D

As far as clinical times go, you can choose 2 days per week, basically 6:45-3:15 or one day per week 6:45-7:15. Also, you will have to go the the hospital the day before to choose your patient.

Sunny,

Would it be possible to take some of these extra 4 hour classes that you need in the summers? If so, then that would certainly lighten your load.
