North Carolina Roll Call

Published

Ok folks - it is that time again .... there are many new names and faces (well avatars anyway) on our web site ... time to get to know the North Carolina people.

Lets give a location - why you are there, your current nursing status and anything else you might want to share ....

I am Patrick, the moderator for the North Carolina Forum ... live in Asheville - moved here a year ago from Florida and love the mountains and the moderate climate .... can tell you that Hurricane Frances breezed through town last week and gave us a lot of headaches! Anyway, I am a nurse manager for a med-surg unit and a single father of 3. I attend the University of Phoenix and am hoping to graduate with my BSN-MSN in the very near future. :coollook:

hi im nikki. i live in sanford. im doing the daily commute to north carolina central univ, but am hoping to move to durham in january. im finishing up my prereqs and hoping i make it into the second leg of the program at central. its very very competitive.

I am orginally from Long Island NY moved to VA then to San Diego then I am setting roots in NC. I currently live with my inlaws in Star, NC. About 20 min from Troy. My husband is in the Navy. That is the reason for all of the moves.

I am currently on maternity leave with a 10 week old daughter. She was born in California.

I am a Med/Surg RN with 2 years experience. I worked in the first magnet hospital in San Diego. I absolutely loved it. Although I do not plan to work in a hospital again, I will miss it. I am going to try and work part time with no holidays. Well see if that happens. Boy your perspective sure changes when you have kids.

HI Everyone and welcome to the forum .... great to see so many new faces here in North Carolina ... but, it is a beautiful State that has so much to offer.

Judie - I am an online student with UoP. I am finishing up my last few classes before graduation and then trying to make a decision on what I will do after that as far as my Master's program. Did you go to classes or online?

Hey there NC. Im in Raleigh at ECPI College of Technology. I have 3 months down and 9 more months to go. That is a pregnancy -help me push this baby on out-ha ha I can not wait to finish up. I am either going directly to Vance-Granville to bridge to RN or I will work from 2006-2007 and in 08 bridge over at Durham Techs program. They only offer it every other year, so I havent quite figured it out yet. So far things are going good.

Good luck to everybody

I live about 45 min. from the Charlotte area but work in Concord.. I have worked there since graduation in 2003 and currently work on a medical observation floor.. I am planning on getting married in 1-2 years and will probably have to move to wilkesboro or Mooresville.. my boyfriend lives in wilkesboro and works for the lowe's corporation.. he will be graduating in december with a business degree and will either have a job in wilkesbor or will have to move to the main corporate offices in mooresville.. any ideas of area hospitals? If we live in wilkesbor I have thought about Forsyth in winston salem or Lake norman if we live in mooresville..

Hello!

Senior Student Nurse in Piedmont.

Lived here all my life.

Plan to check out Florida one day; after getting my foot in the Nursing door.

I'm new to this thread and to allnurses.com. So hello to everyone in NC. I'm in MI, been a nurse for 5 yrs and currently work in the float pool at U of M hospital. We're considering moving to the Raleigh or Charlotte area and have read a lot of the posts regarding these areas and got some great info so thank you! I have a question about the weather as I read in one post the Raleigh is 'hurricaine alley' and that in February there are ice storms. I'm surprised about this because I went through the history on the old farmers almanac and did see some cold days but it didn't seem that bad. Of course being from Michigan we're use to bad weather but thats why we want to leave. Thanks for any info you have and I hope everyone is enjoying their weekend.

Hello again, I forgot to mention earlier --- I love the position I have at UM, my current job and am hoping to find something just like it in NC. Like I said in my last post I work the float pool. But I am called a temporary Central Staffing Resourse nurse. So basically I work when I want to. They say you are suppose to fulfill so many weekends per year but they don't enforce it. As far as holidays go I'm not required and they wouldn't let me if I tried due to the pay. CSR temps here get $33/hr w/ $1-2 shift diff's. I love the flexibility because it's perfect for having kids. I call and ask if they need help (which they always do) and then work that shift. I can put in a schedule if I want but don't have to. The down sides are no benefits and no guaranteed work. Fine with me. Anyone know if there are positions like this in the Raleigh or Charlotte area?

Thanks again,

glowrm

North Carolina has beautiful weather! It's still in the low to mid 80's here in September. We do get hot in the summer, but not unbearable. We do get cold in the winter, but again, not unbearable. We did have a major ice storm a few years back, but this is rare. We'll get a good, state-wide snow (2+ inches) every few years. Being from MI, you'll be surprised by how easily school is cancelled for bad weather! And as for hurricanes, if one does make it up to NC, Raleigh is in the middle of the state, so it may get some residual - rain, winds, a tree limb down. I love it in here in NC! People smile and hold doors open for others and chat while waiting in check-out lines. Good luck with your move if you decide to join us!

Thanks alot for the info on the weather. NC sounds like an awesome place!

I hope hurricaine Ophelia takes it easy!

I live in Murphy also (Hanging Dog). I work in Blairsville though. Pursue the best option for your career. At least with a CNA you can work weekends and go to school. I was a CNA, then LPN, now RN. It probably would have been easier to get the RN first in the long run, but, I probably wouldn't have had some of the experiences I have had that I have lived and learned :chuckle Good luck in your career. I honestly believe nursing is one of the most rewarding although stressful jobs there could be.

They do have 'float' or 'flex' pools here at the major hospitals. However, if you do apply, make sure of which pool it actually is. Some have pools that they call float, but it is a full/part-time position, no differential pay, etc. You're best bet would probably be agency, same or better pay with flexibility that you're used to. A few agencies in this area are nursefinders, intellistaff, and MSN. They all have websites with online apps. Best of luck!
