so what are some of the abreviations used informally in your institution to describe patients.

there are the old ones from Samuel Shems book "House of God"

GOMER get out of my ER

LOLNAD little old lady in no apparent distress

Then the appropriated military ones.

FUBAR f'd up beyond all recognition

SNAFU Situation normal all f'd up

Then there are the ones I have learned since nursing school

TFBUNDY totally F'd but unfortunately not dead yet

JPFROG just plan f'n ran out of gas

AMF kind of like AMA, only Adios Mother F'r (very good for some er pt's.)

When I worked on the med-surg floor, I used to write "PITA PRECAUTIONS" in pencil on the back of certain patients' care plans. That way, staff got a heads-up on pts. or families who were difficult to deal with.

My favorite ED doc used to write on the X-ray req's SBI....something bad inside...........the Rad mds have little humor about this....

I have an updated list of pretty much all of these abbreviations listed on this thread if anyone wants one.

ayemmeff, Smurf is NOT an abbreviation. They are little blue people (cartoon characters) similar to Elves. The term is used to describe someone in severe respiratory distress (going blue in the face).

This one is kinda bad. But when I heard it I thought it was funny.
