No jobs in florida for new grads

Published

Hello everyone. I am getting increasingly frustrated because I have been looking for a graduate nurse position since October. I graduated in December and passed the NCLEX last week. I have been on two interviews with no luck. I feel like the interviews go amazing but then I hear that it has been filled with someone else. I work for a hospital for 4 years and I thought that would give me a toe in the door. Florida hospital does not have anything on their website for GN's and Orlando Health has one. When I called about it they said that they have someone for the position and they are just waiting for them to apply. This is ridiculous. Why did I go to nursing school to have such a problem with finding a job? I am starting to look into nursing homes which is a complete 360 on the area I would really like to work which is postpartum. I haven spoken to all the managers of floors for the hospital I currently work for and my manager said they arent taking any new GN's in the pool. What am I suppose to do??

And does anyone know the starting salary in the orlando area for GN's??

Thanks for letting me vent.....

There is no nursing shortage!!!!

"BOOYARN": Tell that to all the graduate nurses who have applied for at least a year and still can't get hired. How are we supposed to get experience if no one will hire us???

I agree Flordagirl! Where is this experience supposed to come from? We can't go back to school and get it. What is considered as working experience? And a recruiter said that if you start working at a nursing home, try not to stay there too long because hospitals do not view the work experience in the nursing homes the same. WHAT!!! I am confused. WHERE ARE NEW NURSES SUPPOSED TO GET A CHANCE TO PRACTICE AND GAIN EXPERIENCE??

I just moved to Florida and got a job within a week an an acute care hospital - full time, benefits, everything. I take the NCLEX Sept 25th so Lic is not the issue or anything. Have you thought about having someone look at your resume or coach you on interviewing? Or picking up the phone and calling HR depts?

Was this an RN job? I find it very surprising if you got hired as an RN in Florida without even taking the NCLEX. Also what city was this in? And to answer your question I have made several phone calls to several facilities, and I've also had my resume' critiqued before. I know how to apply for a job.

Yes, an RN job with at least 12 weeks of orientation. I live in Lakeland but I also got interviews in Tampa and Orlando. What areas are you looking in?

PS. I'm not trying to brag about it, just trying to help because there ARE jobs

There are places that will hire you as a grad nurse upon graduation without completing the NCLEX. However, the jobs that I know of have terms and conditions along with that. Most of the terms and conditions is that you have to take the NCLEX by a certain time after employment and pass. For example, after being hired as a grad nurse you would have to complete the NCLEX within 90 days of employment and pass or else...........!!!!!!!!! Goodluck and hopefully you find something very soon.

There are no conditions with my employer. If I don't pass the boards I work as a tech until I do.

Do you already have your CNA license though? If you don't and you don't pass boards, I think its Florida law (or at least nursing law lol) that you cannot work as a tech/CNA unless you already have that license.

It's technically a Graduate Nurse position - you can work as a GN once you have your ATT and get your GN permit...I'm getting paid as a nurse but FL law requires you to be an RN for any nursing roles

So to clarify...you need your CNA lic to work as a CNA...not as a GN...but the role will be basically the same except 4h per shift I follow an RN and don't do tech duties

What I was saying is that yes, you can work as a GN once you have your ATT and GN permit, but if you fail boards, you cannot work as a nurse and I am pretty sure (like at least 90% because I have seen it done) you have to get your CNA license to continue working as a CNA/tech because you no longer fall under the nursing student clause.

It might be up to hospital policy then? I know where I'm working I can keep on working in the CNA position...I think the title might change to senior nurse extern...whatever the title, the job is the same.
