Hello everyone. I am getting increasingly frustrated because I have been looking for a graduate nurse position since October. I graduated in December and passed the NCLEX last week. I have been on two interviews with no luck. I feel like the interviews go amazing but then I hear that it has been filled with someone else. I work for a hospital for 4 years and I thought that would give me a toe in the door. Florida hospital does not have anything on their website for GN's and Orlando Health has one. When I called about it they said that they have someone for the position and they are just waiting for them to apply. This is ridiculous. Why did I go to nursing school to have such a problem with finding a job? I am starting to look into nursing homes which is a complete 360 on the area I would really like to work which is postpartum. I haven spoken to all the managers of floors for the hospital I currently work for and my manager said they arent taking any new GN's in the pool. What am I suppose to do??
And does anyone know the starting salary in the orlando area for GN's??
Thanks for letting me vent.....
I just spent the last couple hours looking for work (a daily thing, lol) I am in Ft Lauderdale, FL. Maybe Lakeland and other areas have not as many nursing schools, smaller graduating classes, etc BUT down here in South FLA they are not shy to tell you "WE DO NOT HIRE NEW GRADS, but we have new nurse programs that start in, um March or Feb...well we dont know but check the website all Nov n Dec so you can apply. And there are only 10 or so spaces so good luck!" I think today I feel a bit broken...I honestly do. I would move if I could, but no one pays to relocate you, especially when they have to train you (I've made the calls). SO all the job getting gurus please tell me your secrets...
Florida Hospital Orlando is also interviewing and hiring new grads now. I know 3 east a PCU multisystem floor and transplant division is also interviewing.
I think thats for their New Grad program. Applications are closed. I applied to that but it didn't work out bc they dont help with relocation. If its just regular aplications please let us know...even tho they dont relovate maybe someone up there can find work : )

No, they probably would not help with relocation because they have so many people willing to take the job and be happy to have one. But everyone on here is saying there are no jobs in Florida but there are. Yes you might have to move on your own dollar but it seems a small price to pay for steady work in the field of your choice in this economy.

Ok so please TELL US WHERE THE JOBS ARE!! I'm sorry but I've just about had it today with this mess. I am 23, I have a car...the end, and my mother is helping me pay for that. I barely make 150 biweekly at the job I have, so please be more mindful when making these comments. A small price to pay for the job you want you say...so what about those of us who dont have their own dollar, should we sit and rot? What are your suggestions there...enlighten me please. There are many people who want to work...I didn't go to University or take student loans to not find a job. There are many people who are wiling to relocate...just can't do it by themselves. So dont make it seem that there is no effort being made. For every person that says there are jobs in Florida NOT ONE can say where and add new grad in the very same sentence. Please be different and shed some more light on the jobs for new grads in Florida that are not Versant (they dont start til March...bills dont wait that long)...better yet, in South Florida. Those people in Central and North Florida are mighty lucky I guess. It seems thats where the work is but my South Florida butt cant AFFORD to relocate with MY OWN DOLLAR since I don't have enough of MY OWN DOLLAR with which to relocate...SMH. Such a small price as it was put but I can't even afford that

Wait! why are you directing your anger at me? I came on and stated that I knew two floors at the place I work that are hiring grad nurses-knew this for a fact. I thought I was being helpful. My floor just hired several grad nurses so I know of what I speak. They start not in March but October. They were conducting interviews last week. I simply stated that no i don't believe they would pay location costs and frankly why would they when it is a buyers market so to speak. There are obviously a lot more nurses in need of jobs than jobs available.
And I sympathize with your situation but this is not the 1st time in the world and you are not the first person to not be able to find work upon graduation. The world does not owe you a job and if you accept that maybe that is a good place to start. Best of luck to you.
Your sympathy doesn't seem genuine at all:

Of course the world owes me nothing and I dont think my reponse to you stated that. And I guess you can't answer any of the questions I asked you bc...oh right you have not one answer...
In my original post I stated "I think thats for their New Grad program. Applications are closed. I applied to that but it didn't work out bc they dont help with relocation. If its just regular aplications please let us know...even tho they dont relovate maybe someone up there can find work : )"
I'm not an employee at ur hospital (lol) but I also know what I speak of. They do start in October and they have recently conducted interviews bc their application deadline has passed and now they can hire etc...
For versant programs they begin to accept applications in Nov/Dec but they dont begin until March...if you read again that's what I was talking about ; )
Is your hospital's program a Versant program?
Matter of fact, if you truely sympathized with mine and countless others situation you would have never made the statement you did about accepting nothing is owed to you...take those empty words somewhere else...You would give ADVICE about where to look and things of that nature...
Just re-read my posts I urge you...

Ok then I guess you expressed yourself. You seem very angry so I will not bother with you any more. But yes, my empathy is sincere and yes your post did reek a bit of feeling like you were somehow entitled to a job after years at university etc. You may be in for a long road with the way you seem to be handling things. But again best of luck to you.

Preeps was just trying to give you advice on what to do. I went into nursing school thinking I would get a bonus when I got out because of the need, but I found it difficult to find a job. Thankfully I did not have to look for long, but I did look hard. A nurse recruiter told me to look at finding a job like a full time job. Spend eight hours or so calling places, filling out applications, etc. I got an interview simply because I worked at Publix and the nurse manager thought I would have excellent customer service skills (which I do). You stated that you only make $150 bi-weekly. Get another job or at least attempt to. The fact of the matter is that there are waaaay too many new grads in Florida, and the United States. Try looking outside of the state. My friend got a job in New York, with her moving expenses paid. And I know Shands Gainesville pays for moving expenses as they loose most of their new grads because they go back home. Look into applying there. And apply to everything. No matter if it says it wants a certain amount of years experience or if its a job at a nursing home. Home Health I know is always hiring new grads, even if their website says that they are not. I had two interviews with home health agencies, with my ASN and no experience.

Well I don't think preeps was actually. I think your reply gives much advice even tho I already do much of what you said. I wake up at 7am and search and call until 2pm when I get ready to go to work. Thanks again, but Preeps posted about Florida hospital and I replied as I just applied there and am familiar with their program. Preeps reply to my post did upset me. I ask for any info so if not me others can be helped and then to get a reply of "there are jobs in FLA, etc just spend ur own money" from preeps when I'm 5hrs into calling places and talking to nasty HR ppl doesn't help. I asked a few questions and didn't get one answer. I guess its a game of perception but I percieved it as not helping. Thanks for your post tho great to hear of hospitals still doing relocation, pay expenses and such. I wouldn't mind moving to work but I find that every state has its own rules for endorsement, some require experience, some require CECs, etc. Thanks for the Shands tip too and I do apply much, even to me a prison nurse, but they have no openings at the moment
