hey just wanted to let you all know that there will be a NICU special coming on July 15th at 10pm(eastern time) on Discovery Health!! for anyone interested in becoming a NICU nurse or for anyone who already is one!! i am really excited because there are hardly any programs about the NICU...the shows are usually about healthy babies/or babies with small problems...you dont see any that are devoted solely to the NICU so it's great to see them changing it up!
I have to agree. Show me the mechanical chest movements of a 24 weeker on a vent or oscillator with settings turned up so high, you just know they're going to get a pneumo. Show me a micro with IV's in nearly every limb, their scalp, and their umbilical cord. Oh, and don't forget all the desats. To me, this show did not depict what really happens in the nicu.
I was disappointed in it too. I stumbled across it by accident, got all excited, but then ended up turning it off after a few minutes. I only saw the 36 weeker with RDS, and it wouldn't have been that bad except for the dramatic voice-overs. I definitely think it was going for emotional reactions of "Oh no, I can't take my baby home" instead of information about the NICU. More along the lines of the delivery shows where pregnant women watch and then get terrified.
I am happy that actual NICU nurses have said that they do not like this show. At this point in time, I am very interested in working in LDRP and then moving on to the NICU with hopes to go to school for NNP. I believe that I would love LDRP only b/c I am very interested in the baby shows that come on both Discovery and TLC (and I've had 2 children, so LDRP is really the only area of a hospital that I've personally been in). Anyway, I watched NICU last week (I have last night's episodes recorded). I really didn't get anything from the show; definitely not a "I think this is what I want to do with my life" feeling like I get from the baby shows. I will continue to watch, but I hope it evolves into something more.
I really disliked last night's episode...what the heck...did that baby really warrant an LP? We don't routinely do those anymore unless the kid is really sick! I am so disappointed in this show. I'm sure they won't show any bad kids with bad outcomes, the reality we all live with each day at work.

I was thinking the same thing! I don't even work NICU and I thought the LP was extreme! The baby wasn't even showing symptoms, they were just doing it for prophylaxis!? And it looked like the NP was performing it.

No developmental care, assessments w/o gloves, wouldn't consider the infants particularly "critical", little focus on what the nurses actually do, way too much time on the delivery and everyone involved was way too emotional...ahh typical, I don't think there will ever be an accurate hospital show that will please all hospital employees who know what its really like
