LPN salary in New Orleans/Northshore area
Thanks for the response. I am starting the LPN program at Nunez in the spring; it's a year long. Salary matters, but experience matters more, KWIM? I think I want to work at Ocshner b/c it seems like their LPNs get to do the more patient care than the other hospitals. I live near St. Tammany hospital and I would love to work there, but I've heard that their LPNs do clerical work. I plan to enter Excelsior's program as soon as I'm able to do so, and I'll need the hands on experience. Thanks :)

Charity LPN Program
The deadline is tomorrow. You need to have all of your pre-reqs completed and be enrolled in the required math course for the summer. Here is a link to the bulletin http://nunez.edu/Academic%20Affairs%20-%20Public/HealthSciencesDivision/Practical_Nursing/PN%20Application%20Information%20Bulletin%20rev%204-2011.pdf

Charity LPN Program
Nunez's LPN program has a new director, and she has totally redone the program (for the better). The program is only 12 months now and has more clinical time than classroom time, so more hands on stuff than before. Also, the clinicals are done in hospital units as opposed to nursing homes. I believe there are 2 or 3 weeks in a nursing home, and the rest is in major hospitals in the area. I'm applying to start there in the spring. My initial plan was to do an RN/BSN program, but I'm having some difficulty getting into a program. Good luck everyone. :)

Excelsior-can I start studying now?
I am (hopefully) entering into an LPN program in January. The program is 12 months long, and I plan to enroll in Excelsior as soon as I graduate. I had the initial intention of completing an ADN or BSN program, but I'm haveing quite a bit of trouble getting accepted into one (long story). I have all of my general education classes, even those for a BSN, so would it be worth it for me to start studying for the Excelsior exams while waiting to start the LPN program? Also, I just read a thread where someone posted that they had completed the program in 9 months, but could have done it in six; is this the normal timeframe for completing the program?

SELU spring 2012
According to the school of nursing web page, if you have already started the 121/101, etc. sequence you are required to finish it. So yes, they should accept it.

Su, I think that the BSN at SELU may be the better choice for me. The last time I looked into SELU they held all of their clinicals in Baton Rouge, but now there are clinical sections in Hammond, Covington, and Slidell. It will be nice to be able to do my clinicals around the corner from my house instead of having to drive across the lake. I planned on returning to school to complete my BSN as soon as I graduated from the ADN program, but I would love to be able to work as an RN while doing that. I do believe that everything happens for a reason, but it's just hard to accept that sometimes; however, if they called me tomorrow and said that I could start in August I would be a very happy girl

My overall GPA is 3.51, and my CSN GPA is 3.41. I got 0 points b/c I dropped two courses in 2007 (Fine Arts and a Micro re-take b/c I got a C and was trying to get a higher grade). I got an 83 on the TEAS, but what really hurt me was that my A&P 2 is from 2004, so I had to retake it. Had my A&P 2 not been too old, I would have had more than enough points to be accepted. I ended up with a profile score of 50 (I only got 5 points in the completed coursework section b/c of the A&P being too old). I was enrolled in the A&P 2 lecture at the time, but I could not get into a lab on the northshore. Just being enrolled in the lab, no matter what grade I received, would have given me the extra 5 points that I needed to be accepted. I was in the first group on the wait list, but the admissions coordinator said that they were not taking anyone off of the wait list this time. It's frustrating, but it really is my fault (it took me a little while to realize that) b/c my score should not have come down to 5 points making or breaking me. I have decided to apply to SELU's BSN program b/c it's based solely on pre-requisite GPA (and I now have a 3.8). Thank you for your concern, it's appreciated, good luck in your program :)

http://www.selu.edu/acad_research/depts/nurs/undergrad_degree/curriculum_documents/11-12%20Nursing%20Curriculum%20Sheet%20Website2.pdf They changed some of the pre-reqs, you only need one intro. chem course instead of chem I and II!

LPN salary in New Orleans/Northshore area
What is average pay for an LPN working in a hospital in the New Orleans/Northshore area? Do LPNs get shift diffs like RNs do, and if so how much extra is it for nights and weekends? I'm trying to decided if it would be beneficial to me (monetarily, I know the extra experience would be good) to complete an LPN program and work while I'm obtaining my ADN/BSN. Thanks :)

Louisiana Nurses--Need Info!
If the hospitals are not hiring then why do they have jobs posted? There is a particular hospital (on the northshore) who's job openings change regularly. I always thought that the posted positions were getting filled and then new positions were opening up, are the hospitals just hiring from within? It makes me very nervous b/c the only two careers that I could see myself enjoying (nursing or teaching high school science), both have terrible job outlooks

I think that every college/university is like that. I've been to a few different schools, and I have not had a great experience with any of them.

SELU spring 2012
I was told that if I am in my last semester of pre-reqs when I am applying, that I need to be enrolled at SLU. If I do not want to enroll at SLU for my last semester, then I need to wait until I am completely done with pre-reqs before I can apply. I was wondering if they would look at mid-term grades, b/c even if I'm at another school taking my last pre-reqs, it would still show up on my transcript as enrolled. I have called three times and spoken to three different people. Two told me that I need to be at SLU and one said that I didn't. I think that I read in the nursing section of the catalog that I need to be.

I regret not retaking the TEAS, I have no idea why I didn't! I think the cut off score depends on how many applicants there are vs. how many they can accept. From what I've read on here, everyone has said the cut off is usually 40-50, so I guess that last semester there was a mix of really high scoring applicants and the school budget cuts.
