NICU considering new grads?

Specialties NICU

Hello everyone,

I'm a new grad nurse from MA. I graduated in May and passed my boards in June 08. :nurse: My senior nursing practicum was in a NICU and I absolutely loved it. :redbeathe I had one of my happiest and saddest moments there, and I'm determined to be a NICU nurse since then.

I'm considering relocating if I can get a position in the NICU. I was wondering which NICU is hiring new grads.

Thanks for the info in advance! :)

i don't graduate until may, and i'm already hired to our level III NICU.

my hospital has a 6 month internship program for new hires to the unit, and they accept people fresh out of school, if they're qualified. i start in june, about a month after graduation.

Congrats caraway!! :yeah: Where's your NICU? I'm so jealous! NICU is like my dream unit. :p

McAllen is the border, it's a different world, very very very different than Boston. I seriously doubt you could get around without a car. Rents however should be reasonable. If you don't know Spanish it will make things even more challenging. I might recommend visiting McAllen before you seriously consider taking on all those changes in your life all at once. Learning to be a nurse as a new grad is challenging enough.

Congrats!! How is the cost of living there? Are rents expensive? Can I get around without a car? Thanks for your input!

cost of living in houston is not bad at all. you will need a car though to get around. you can live in the medical center and get around on the metro rail or bus but to go anywhere else, you will need a car. renting ranges, but you can look it up on har.com. i don't know the prices around the med ctr...most people buy around here because its about the same, so why not invest...but i would rent first.

houston's med ctr is in need of nurses. and they are opening up hospitals in the suburbs as well. many offer sign on bonuses as well. do your research and see whats best for you.

Try Phoenix Childrens or Tucson Medical Center. Both are in Arizona, hire new grads, offer relocation assistance, and pay for your student loans along with your NCLEX. I think you would love living in AZ. You can get around with out a car(not entirely recommended) and it would be easy for you to fly home. You will have to sign a two year contract(two years is nothing) and start on nights but both are excellent NICU's. Good luck.

I'm gonna definitely look into that! Thanks!

Med center apartments are very high for what you get. I have a fairly decent one bedroom and it runs me over 1k.

D-I-T-T-O.

There's some cheaper "nice" apartments south/southeast of the medcenter that the girls at work like, but the area personally makes me a bit uncomfortable. I'd rather pay a bit more and live in a nicer area with less crime.

I'm in chicago. I sold my car and moved here after school. I pay about 800 in rent, near wrigley field. I live an AMAZING life here, W/O a car. I would HATE myself if I had kept my car. My roomate has a car and hates the hassle. We both work (she goes to school) in the Illinois Medical District and she drives. She's always complaining about parking and tickets....I just jump on the bus there and back, as do MANY MANY MANY of my co-workers.

Hospitals around here do hire new grads!

You can PM me if you have more questions.

Hey! I'm VERY excited! I just heard a couple hours ago that I get to do my senior precepting hours in the NICU! Rumor has it they are never hiring and are even currently overstaffed, but I'm VERY excited to get my feet wet in the area to confirm my love for it! I'm also hoping deep down that I can make a great impression on them and possibly arrange to work there if something may come up between now and January!!! Good luck to the rest of you also who are looking for new grad NICU positions!! :yeah:

Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center in So. Cal. has a new grad program. We are a CCS surgically designated level II which means we care for every type of patient other than open heart (we do PDA ligation).

I graduated in May as well. Deciding on relocation is not easy. You can research the cities where you are considering and check to see if the have good public transportation available. Most major (and some small) cities have websites where you can check out everything about the place.

I too am considering relocation and for me cost of living in an area is important. I definately don't want to have to pay $1000/month for rent ever again.
