NICU considering new grads?

Hello everyone,

I'm a new grad nurse from MA. I graduated in May and passed my boards in June 08. :nurse: My senior nursing practicum was in a NICU and I absolutely loved it. :redbeathe I had one of my happiest and saddest moments there, and I'm determined to be a NICU nurse since then.

I'm considering relocating if I can get a position in the NICU. I was wondering which NICU is hiring new grads.

Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital of NY Presbyterian hires new grads into our NICU all the time. And you get a 18-28 week orientation.

You might want to ask this in the MA forum. Some NICUs accept new grads, some do not.

Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital of NY Presbyterian hires new grads into our NICU all the time. And you get a 18-28 week orientation.

I've looked at NYP before, but thought their NICU do not hire new grads because it isn't listed as a specialty for new grad RN. They have a NICU position on their site but it says a min. of one year or more exp. is required. I just tried and applied anyway. Thanks, Steve! :)

Hi redefinition, I know that actually a lot of NICUs in MA used to hire new grads, but somehow most of them just changed their minds, or they hire internal new grads first. The NICU where I had my practicum, the nurse manager was going to give me an interview (she told my preceptor), but she changed her mind after 2 new people on orientation left. :no: Both without NICU experience. Just my luck. :o

I see that you're from Texas. I actually got a call from HCA saying that the NICU in Mcallen is looking for a RN and hires new grad. They offered me sign-on bonus and relocation assistance. By any chance, do you know anything about Mcallen?

I'm from Houston and McAllen is south of Texas near the border I think...

Well I'm a new grad, just passed the boards in Sept and I got hired at Texas Children's Hospital NICU 3 along with about 3 other new grads. I know there are a few other hospitals that do graduate nurse internships like st josephs and the women's hospital as well.

Johns Hopkins has an incredible new grad NICU program. If you want to stay local Dartmouth-Hitchcock is currently accepting applications for their new grad NICU program. I believe it starts in Feb. I got into it but unfortunately realized the reality of a 260 mile/5 hour daily commute and had to give up the dream since relocating is not an option. I know exactly how you're feeling. I'm also a new grad from MA and have applied to every single NICU in MA, RI and NH without luck but I won't give up. It's the only place I can see myself working for the rest of my career. I want to be a NNP so badly! If you are lucky enough to be able to relocate you'll be able to get into a NICU without a problem. Keep me posted!

i don't graduate until may, and i'm already hired to our level III NICU.

my hospital has a 6 month internship program for new hires to the unit, and they accept people fresh out of school, if they're qualified. i start in june, about a month after graduation.

I know!! I'm starting to realize the reality of relocating too.. On top of my student loans, I can't manage to relocate to a place with expensive rents AND needing a car to get around. :no: I've applied to the UCLA new grad residency program and got an email to set up an interview the next day. But I heard that you must have a car to get around.. so I'm having second thoughts. I got a call from a recruiting specialist to relocate to a NICU in Texas with big bonus and relocation assistance (red flag). I'm seriously considering it though because I don't know where else we can get NICU experience since the ones in MA are not hiring new grads anymore.

I had my practicum in one of the teaching hospitals in Boston and they actually have 2 positions open for nights. The nurse manager just recently started to feel like hiring new grads again after 2 years. She told my preceptor that she was going to give me an interview, but she changed her mind after 2 new people on orientation left. :uhoh3: (One was a new grad and the other was an ICU nurse) I haven't heard anything from the NM since then. :bluecry1:

There's other NICUs in Boston I know that hire new grads, but it's always the internal new grads that have it first.

When did you graduate? Are you working now then?

I graduated in May 08 and have been looking since late June 08. I just accepted to work as a tech on a med-surg floor for now until I can find an RN position. (The hospital has a hiring freeze)
