I am a new grad since May 2010 searching for a NICU position in PA. It seems to be difficult to find NICU positions, let alone a NICU position that is willing to take a new graduate. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Where in Pa are you looking?
I live near the Wilkes-barre area, but am willing to relocate to find a NICU position since I am single with no family obligations.
West Penn, Magee, Children's and Dubois all have NICU. However, I dont know if they are hiring and if they are if they hire new graduates. I do know Childrens will hire graduates into the PICU setting.
However, you may find it easier to get a position somewhere and then transition into a specialty. I know when I am done I would eventually like to end up in a L&D or NICU, but I am willing to try out any area that will be willing to give me a position. I know where I work its easier to transfer then it is to get into the system, which is why im glad I work there now as an aide.
Thank you I will look into these. Another other suggestions would be great.

Unfortunately, new grads now days cannot be picky. Long are the days when you could get hired into your desired specialty.
You might want to go into peds or nursery (if available) or broaden where you are willing to work and then transition into the NICU when a position becomes available.
I did just that and started off in medsurg a few yrs ago and then transitioned into NICU.
Not saying it is impossible or that you will not find a NICU job currently, just that it is going to be possibly very difficult right now.
I'd take anything if you find it over waiting to find a NICU position and risk becoming an "Old new grad".
Good luck

I also live near Wilkes-Barre too. I do know that General Hospital in Wilkes-Barre has several OB and L&D positions available that may be a way to get "your foot in the door" so to speak to help you get some experience. But I haven't heard or seen any local hospitals with open NICU positions recently. I'm sure others will be of more help to you.

I work at Penn State Hershey Medical Center. There recently was a lot of openings in NICU. We are building a new Children's Hospital so NICU may also be expanding and have more openings. I work in L&D there and my dept does hire new grads if you want to keep an eye on the job board. They will probably hire three GNs in January. Good luck!
