new RN - income questions

Nurses New Nurse

Published

I'm a new registered nurse, and I'm browsing through different hospitals to work for.

Does magnet hospitals offer more pay?

What states in the US are currently offering more pay or have an increase rate?

How much does a new RN usually get paid for? Here in Michigan is only $16/hr, which I thought was quite low. But I'm not sure how does that compare to other states.

Thank you :)

Ouch, where in MI are you looking? I just moved from southeast michigan, and new grads in hospitals were being offered in the low $20's

I just got hired for my first hospital RN job. The base pay is $20.84 with $1.50 night differential, and $1.50 weekend differential.

Since I will be working nights I will make $22.34 an hour, $23.84 on weekends.

Oh, and I live in Iowa. (Supposedly the lowest paid state for nurses.)

almost similar to my sister, and we live here in Miami

1st year nurse in Chico CA, 31/hr in SNF c 2$/hr diff for PM and 3/hr for NOC

Lots of OT potential, I work and double (16 hours :p) straight pay for the first 8 hours , 1/12 for hours 8-12 then double pay for hours 12-16 for an other together total of 628 for a 16hour shift... do that once a pay period and youre set!

even better I've interviewed for an acute care poisition. I would be working as part of the California nurses association and starting @ 42$/hour c a large NOC diff....

COL really isnt that bad here in chico.... there are many different economic areas to CA

I live in SC, where the cost of living is pretty low. I currently make $20.09/hour at a nursing home. I just got a job offer at a hospital, however. They paid $22/hour base pay, $3/hr shift diff for 2nd/3rd shift, $9/hr for weekends...I'll be working third so I'll get to take advantage of the shift diff.....I can't wait to be making $5-$11/hr more!

I just got hired as new grad at a hospital in Atlanta.

$22.34 base pay

+ 3.75 nights

$21-23 seems the norm range for new grads in Atlanta. Yall make me want to move to another state!...Give me a few more years and I will be making bank too :0

North Georgia, 70 miles outside of Atlanta:

$18.25 base, +$1 for BSN, +$2.25 3p-7p, +$3 7p-7a, +10% of base for a weekday nurse working a weekend or +$7 for weekend option. COL is super low so I don't mind a bit :)

I agree, perhaps dr. office it would be that low, but hospitals most start out at 23/hr

I'm in lower Michigan and starting pay for newly licensed nurses is about $23.00 an hour base. Differential varies hospital to hospital, but the base pay is about the same. Nurse Externs/Techs make $15 - $17.00 per hour and Hospital Aides/Assistants make about $12.00.

So, to answer your question. U of M (non magnet) pays 25.55+ differential for new grads (level A nurse). Detroit Children's (magnet I believe) pays $23 ish.......Just look to other places. Your number seems real low...Are you a LPN?

mid-$20's here in Florida, at least my area. Local hospital gives a $6 shift differential for working nights.
