new RN - income questions

Nurses New Nurse

Published

I'm a new registered nurse, and I'm browsing through different hospitals to work for.

Does magnet hospitals offer more pay?

What states in the US are currently offering more pay or have an increase rate?

How much does a new RN usually get paid for? Here in Michigan is only $16/hr, which I thought was quite low. But I'm not sure how does that compare to other states.

Thank you :)

Im here in So Cal and just accept my first job on a cardiac tele unit. $32.82/hr which includes an unknown differential for BSN. I was also offfered nights which I did not take but there was a $7/hr differential = $39.82 (nights are not for me).

Is this Whittier Presbyterian? I interviewed there before but now working somewhere else :-)

yeah, haha how did u know? why did you go to another hospital?

Better offer and commute distance but It is a great hospital! Enjoy :-)

Hi Krisgrande!

I just interviewed at this hospital on Tuesday March 29 for the cardiac floor and was told I will get a response by early next week. The wait is killing me!! This would be my dream department. I have a lot of experience as a student within cardiac floor including the cath lab. Do you know how many people they are hiring? I know they are still interview a lot of people =/ any info would be greatly appreciated! and congrats to you on the position!

When They called to offer me the position they told me that after they decided to hire me they sat down and had a meeting. They said that they are in a period of tremendous expansion and have a need to hire a bunch. The unit director told me that for the Aprial 4th start they were hiring 2-3 spots. They have orientation once a month I believe. I saw that they reposted the 1 tower position the other day. Where did you go to school?

Hey Krisgrande!

They did repost the position. They told me that my start date would be for the May 4th start and not April 4th if i get the job. I found out about the position kind of late. From what I heard they are interviewing a bunch of us. Experienced and new grads with no experience. Im just worried about the nurses they're interviewing with experience. I don't have any outside from nursing school. School wise its not a problem for me. I got my first bachelor degree from CSULB in healthcare admin within 3 years then moved on to NYU for my BSN. Thanks for the replay!

Specializes in ICU.

Boston area new grads, if lucky enough to find a job, are making between $25-29/hr. Shift differentials vary greatly--I just left a position where I got $27 base, plus $1.75 for nights, $1.25 for weekends. My new employer offers $29.28 per hour base pay for new grads off orientation. Differential is $4 for weekends, $5 for evenings, $7 for nights.

Remember to take benefits into account when you're looking at job offers. I'll be saving $700/month for health insurance for my family of 4 at my new job. That's like a $8,000 raise--not a small amount of $$.

And of course, the COL is on the high side in eastern MA...

I'm just curious about how much the extra rate is for new RNs in the Boston area who decline healthcare coverage and benefits? I get it thru my husband's work. (don't get me wrong, I'd take whatever they'd pay me if I was lucky enough to get a job!!)

I asked at both places and this was not an option at either (or with my husband's company) unfortunately!

Where do you work?

Specializes in Postpartum, Adult ICU.

I just started as a new grad in February in Phoenix, AZ at $20.50/hr during orientation (4 months for ICU), $25/hr after orientation, +$4 shift diff for nights/+$2 for weekends.

However, the positions for new grads here are FEW AND FAR BETWEEN. :/

San Diego, Ca.

RN position, starting rate is $30/hr FT w/benefits.

Also $1.20 extra an hr if you have a BSN.

So, I get $31.20/hr my first job.

No weekendsw differential, but second shift (1900-0700) gets $4.00/hr MORE.

*Remember to consider the cost of living here in SoCal, some of the highest around. You won't find a decent 1 bdrm for less then $1,000/mo. A nice 2 bdrm will run you around $1,600/mo.
