new RN - income questions

Nurses New Nurse

Published

I'm a new registered nurse, and I'm browsing through different hospitals to work for.

Does magnet hospitals offer more pay?

What states in the US are currently offering more pay or have an increase rate?

How much does a new RN usually get paid for? Here in Michigan is only $16/hr, which I thought was quite low. But I'm not sure how does that compare to other states.

Thank you :)

Hospitals in my area start from 20 to 22 (TX). I'm working Psych Inpatient so I start at 24, and I'm working nights so 3 diff comes out to 27. Graduated last month.

My friend just started working nights in the ICU here in TN and she makes $21/hr base plus $4.50 night shift and an extra $8 if she works weekends.;)

$27.00 /Hour (with differentials $31/ per hour) here in Texas...lovin' it because our cost of living is soooo low!!

Where are you working? I just got hired on at S&W in temple and base pay is $24.47 for grad nurses in their internship program. I'm also working out in another smaller hospital where base pay for new grads is $20, which is not too shabby, but I'm having a little wage envy here. ;)

I'm right outside Philadelphia. For my first job out of school on a tele floor at a non-magnet hospital and I was making 26.50/hr with 10% shift diff for nights. I was there 7 months. I am getting ready to start a new job in the ER at a Magnet facility and I was offered 28.97 with a $10,000 sign on. I am amazed at the difference across the country.

I am originally from MI and my first job was $20+ an hour starting on a med/surg unit right out of nursing school. Places may pay more, but cost of living might be higher, like NYC or Cali. I personally would not take less than $20 as an RN out of nursing school. Also being willing to work weekends and/or nights will give you great shift differentials anywhere from $2-7 an hour more....

I'm in TX and a BSN new grad makes between 20-28. I started at 24 base and 3.5 for night diff

This is also a good place to understand what you make, and what it means...

I live here in Michigan and I don't know where in the city that they only pay $16-$17hr for nurses. I just got my nursing license and I'm searching for a nursing job. So far I have seen between $20-$40hr. I know in the hospital in Michigan they may pay $27-$40hr for RN and LPN maybe $18-$23hr. I know I will not accept less than $21hr. Just curious what's the most you guys ever made on a monthly bases including overtime, shift premium? I know a friend that said she made 10,000 in one month doing overtime.

I'm in Canada. I receive 33.00 an hour plus 3 dollars an hour night differential.

I am a new grad in California and my starting at a magnet hospital with a wage of $31/hr (that includes a small differential for BSN). Sounds like a lot, but the cost of living here is extremely high. In any case, I'm thankful just to have a job :)

I am MI and my experience is different from OP. I was just hired in a LTC facility for PM shift, full-time starting at $25/hour with benefits. I am a brand new RN with no prior experience at all!! I start oreinetation on 3/31- Can't wait!:nurse:

I don't know any RN's in Michigan that make less than $23 either.... Hmmmmm

Im here in So Cal and just accept my first job on a cardiac tele unit. $32.82/hr which includes an unknown differential for BSN. I was also offfered nights which I did not take but there was a $7/hr differential = $39.82 (nights are not for me).
