I will be graduating in May...What are the current income ranges for new nurses? I hope to work in either the Surgery Department or the Emergency Department. I live in Cincinnati and I will graduate with honors. I heard the income for new nurses is around $42,000, my wife seems to think it is closer to $50,000. Anyone have any thoughts or opinions? Thanks!
Nate
$24.72/hr + $1000 sign on bonus in San Diego. Barely enough to cover bills and mortgage. The going rate for a 3 br home in a decent part of the city is $400,000+ My hospital also pays relocation but I don't kow the details bc I didn't need to relocate. There is only one hospital that I know of here that will pay a portion of student loans but it is deemed "serving an underserving population". My hospital is also preparing for it's magnet survey this summer.
:balloons: I live in Northern California, where cost of living is still reasonable, housing is much cheaper, everyone from the city moves here. Our pay is nearly 22/hr for a new grad, with a $3 shift differential. Also reimburrsment for tuition, paid NCLEX courses, reimburrsement for hotel during review, scholarships, and 2-4k sign on bonuses. I may even get paid back for the board and testing fees. *cross your fingers*
I've been an RN now for one year. I'm in RI and work in an ED with a level I Trauma center. I started at 19.60 hr (first shift) and after one year recieved a 1.50 raise. My base is now 21.10 and I work third shift 2.00 diff and 3.50 on weekends. I chose to work 24 hours so anytime I work 4 hours over my eight hours I get double time. I work 3, 12 hour shifts a day where 4 hours of that are double time. (46.20 weekdays and 49.20 weekends) My first year I made close to 60K. I do have to pay 80 bucks a week for health coverage so that comes off that.
On another note, My wife went 2 years to Dental Hygeine school and makes 35 an hour..no weekends, no nights, pretty easy work. Seems kinda unfair huh? lol

I live north of Cincinnati and have also worked as a travel nurse all over the country. I have been a nurse since 1979 ;but now only make $24.50/hour. That equals around $45,000. I have heard that the salary ranges at one of the hospitals in Cincinnati is $16.26-$26.00. No offense to the new grads;but I would be very upset if a manager started a new grad for $42,000. I do know from working around the country that the Midwest (especially around Cincinnati/Dayton area) have extremely low salaries compared to other areas. Go to Salary.com and it will give you the salary levels and also the cost of living. It's a good way to compare salaries. Good luck in your new career.
well, my base salary might not be the highest, but I am getting a $10,000 sign-on and $10,000 to relocate. Sounds ok to me!
Where in Texas are you going to be working? I currently live in Dallas but I'm thinking about Houston after I finish school. Does anyone know anything about starting salaries in Houston?

Hey!! I happen to live in Cowtown!!!
42K is a lot to a new grad just out of school, but I think our GN's start out closer to 46-48K, depending on where you end up. Inner city hospitals tend to pay a little more than suburban hospitals (hazard pay?), and the shift diffs are higher than what I heard from most other areas. Good thing I like the night shift!!
