I will be graduating in May...What are the current income ranges for new nurses? I hope to work in either the Surgery Department or the Emergency Department. I live in Cincinnati and I will graduate with honors. I heard the income for new nurses is around $42,000, my wife seems to think it is closer to $50,000. Anyone have any thoughts or opinions? Thanks!
Nate
I agree ORRNLORI. Cost of living is cheap here. It's cheap where I'm moving. I still won't be making $27/hr, but when you consider the average salary in that area, I will be doing just fine.
NYC is pretty expensive if you live in manhattan but there are boroughs too that are 15-30 mins by subway that are pretty reasonable in housing rates. I live in queens (Astoria) which is a nice neighborhood and pays 1,020 for a 2 bedroom apartment, 15 minutes commute to midtown where i'll be working. Ten blocks away from me is costco -- so what can i ask more? SO if i make 65K a year not to mention overtime, then i can pretty much save some money and enjoy my life.
ALso, coming from overseas and having lived in new york city for 4 years has more advantages than disadvantages for me. If you love culture and good food as well as endless opportunites, new york is the place to be.
You mentioned Hospital for Special Surgery, which I am very interested in for a summer externship and also for future employment, once I graduate....but you did mention the salary for that hospital.I didn't realize the starting salaries were that good.
Thanks for the info.
Lady T618,
Hope you dont mind me asking..... just curious.... why did you choose Hospital for special surgery for possible employment?
Answer me and i'll let you know why i'm asking.... or pm me.
I've been doing some research and in the Chicago suburbs most new grads start around $18-20 per hour, then after a your training/evaluation period (anywhere from 12 weeks - 6 months), you get 'bumped' to regualr RN base pay ($21+). As mentioned in the earlier post, within the city limits, you'll find new grads make more money than in the 'burbs'.
$26.47/hour at Robert Wood Johnson Univ. Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ. The places I looked into were offering around $23-26/hr. Congratulations on graduating!!
Wow that is really good!! Here in Philly new grads make about $24 an hour, and the cost of living is higher then in New Jersey!!

For 1, it's the only Magnet Hospital in the city (if you want to count North Shore-LIJ in Long Island) and I found them to be pretty interesting. They peaked my interest when I went to the NSANYS conference in Tarrytown. Now you got me curious....why r u askin?
I would've PM'd you but I noticed you were not online.
Thanks....you can PM me too if you happen to see me.

Well, gee, okay then. All I was trying to point out was that different cost of living centers will yeild different starting salaries for people. I guess my point was that if some 20 year old new grad read this board, having just been offered 19.00/hour that she/he might be upset hearing that some other new grad who had just been through the same schooling was going to pull 27.00/hr. and not realize why that was. And I got that idea from my 19 year old who really didn't understand that more than just McDonald's was expensive in New York. So I'm really sorry that I somehow apparently upset you to the point you needed to comment on my family and where I live.
