New Nurse Needs Shoes

Published

I am just starting my 12-hour shifts and I want to get good nursing shoes that will last me a while. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I have worn birkenstocks but I prefer Dansko. Just be sure you get the right

size - enough room in the front. I work 12 hour shifts and since the dansko's

I have noticed - no more leg cramps. Hope they work as well for you!

Birkis, hands down

I am just starting my 12-hour shifts and I want to get good nursing shoes that will last me a while. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I tried the N-balance shoes for two days in a row, 12 hours shifts and my feet killed me halfway through each shift. I knew I had four straight 12's coming on and there was not way in heck I was going to make it through with those shoes so I tried the KLOGS and they are 75% or better on my feet. They are squeaky, but my feet don't hurt much.

"Birki's, hands down". Shouldn't that be "Feet down"?:chuckle By the way, I agree!

Personally...I hated my birkenstocks....love to wear them around the house or town...hated them for work...my calves and ankles hurt sooo bad...

Danskos were ok...the heel is too narrow and I found myself turning my ankle alot...I have a friend with a newer pair that has a wider heel and they look pretty comfortable...

I really love my zcoils, by far the most comfy thing that I have worn...I think that I have worn them for about a year...I have the clog style...I have to be able to slide my feet in and out which is -up why I don't wear running shoes or something lace-up... They did "break" the other day....the coil tore apart from the sole on the heel...haven't had time to go down to the store yet but I remember them saying that they would fix any problems like that for free...I am pretty sure that I caused it to tear because when I sit down I find that I push and pull myself around in those rolling chairs by the bottom of the heels...oops. I would buy another pair though (but mine are so broken in a comfy so I hope I don't have to yet)...They are not that much more expensive than other shoes (ie: danskos/nike shox, etc) I feel my feet/legs/comfort are worth it to me....

There are a lot of shoes/styles and price ranges out there...the best thing to do is try on a lot, find what works, and go from there...

Birkenstocks, Birkenstocks, Birkenstocks.....did I mention the best nursing shoes ever are birkenstocks? ! I buy the plastic kind from e-bay. They are the cheapest and most comeorable and you can replace the foot bed every year very cheaply. The shoes never wear out. Here's a link in case you're interested.

Has anyone had a chance to compare zcoils with spiras? Have a favorite? I think I would rather have the coil inside the sole rather than outside as a safety kind of thing - no cords getting tangled in it, etc. But most of all, I am looking for comfort. A local dealer sells the spiras, but no place local sells the zcoils - I'd have to go looking for them.

Absolute favorite for comfort and wear in the past 25 years are ECCO's. They are kind of expensive (at least for my pocketbook, around $135.00) but I never had a bit of pain from the first moment I put them on.

Good luck,

Lisa

Someone on this board recommended "Shoe Crew" nursing shoes and I bought a pair. They are awesome and not too expensive ($50). Thanks for the advice!!

Duty shoes are the best...I've had alot of pairs of sneakers that just don't last from NB to Nike. Sneakers are not for 12 hr. shifts.
