Okay, after watching this video, which is by far very disturbing.......I have to wonder why #1 this inmate was not in full restraints, especially after having assaulted other staff earlier in the morning and #2 if this inmate threatened the nurse 2 hours prior to her treating him, why did she not request to have the inmate in full restraints? If it doesn't feel right, it probably isn't.

Oregon will let you experience all seasons and has a lot to offer and when it's warm it's usually a dry warm. There of course are bugs, i.e. spiders, beetles, ladybugs, mosquitos, bees, but they are not big, depending of course on your interpretation of big and most are more afraid of you and will try to stay away from you. You don't have to check the covers at night and most bugs stay out of the house. I have never seen a cockroach here in oregon. Good luck.

The other day I was stripping a JP drain and it didn't seem like anything was moving down into the bulb even though you could clearly see drainage in the tubing. Can someone give me some advice on the best way to strip a JP drain? Should the tubing stick together after stripping it for better suction besides the bulb being compressed?

What's the nursing moral, attitudes like in your correctional facility? What do you think is the most challenging aspect of your job, staff or inmates?

The worst steth cover I have seen was one that was netlike that covered the whole stethopscope as well as the BELL. Yuk. no way is this cover being cleaned between each patient. I like to swab the bell of my stethoscope with an alcohol swab in front of the patient for their comfort and my peace of mind that I'm not passing something on from one pt. to the next.

Oh how glad I am to know I'm not the only one feeling this way. I have two more weeks before I'm off orientation, but am terrified. I dread every day I have to go to work and it is miserable. I'm questioning whether or not I made the right decision to do med/surg and signed an agreement to work at this hospital for 2 years with no sign on bonus or nothing. I'm not sure I can even make it another month or six months. I fortunately do have other friends who I graduated with that I can talk to that are feeling the same way, but somehow it still seeps into my home life creating tension and stress. If I had known I was going to feel this way about nursing I'm not sure I would have even went to school for it. What a waste. I know this post sounds really negative, but this is truely how I'm feeling right now. I'm just praying it will change for all of us.

Thank you all so much for your advice. I seem to have ambiguous feelings about med/surg and I don't understand it at all. I know each day I work I feel as though I have learned a lot, but realize there is so much more to still learn and I have only one more month of my preceptorship left. Anyways, your advice has been great!

Hi, I'm a new grad on a med/surg floor. I'm curious how everyone starts off their day at the beginning of their shift when you have 4 to 5 patients, need to give meds, do assessments, may have an admit and a discharge, other tx. and still need to do your computer charting that requires you to chart on each patient's IV q2h and their pain q4h. My system just doesn't seem to be working and I constantly feel behind. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

I will be taking the ACLS class in a couple days and my employer gave me a whole lot of papers, charts and one thick book to read. There are so many rhythms that I have never heard of, let alone seen in my life. Can anyone tell me, that has attended ACLS, what I really need to study prior to attending. Thank you

I tried the N-balance shoes for two days in a row, 12 hours shifts and my feet killed me halfway through each shift. I knew I had four straight 12's coming on and there was not way in heck I was going to make it through with those shoes so I tried the KLOGS and they are 75% or better on my feet. They are squeaky, but my feet don't hurt much.

I'm a new grad and will be starting on the floor tomorrow with a preceptor. I believe on the med/surg floor I will be working, has a wide range of experienced nurses, from 1 year to 15 and 20 and I am looking forward to learning from all. It's sad to see that some of the older nurses are feeling like they are not needed by the newer nurses in some areas. If it's any consolation at all, please don't view all new nurses like that, because many of us appreciate and value your experience and advice more than you know!!

I found the Saunders 2nd ed. study CD very helpful. That is the CD that the three gals in my group studied from and we all passed. I also know of a another gal who studied from the Mosby CD and she passed. I'm so sorry you feel so awful. Please know that we are all here for you and know you will pass next time. Relax a while and take care of yourself first and have faith.

Hi Trisha, I just took my boards Weds. for Oregon which does participate in the quick result program. I found out today that I passed my boards after having 145 questions. My questions were from a variety of areas with several pharm questions and one math question, but no new format questions. Another one in my group had the full amount of questions with 265 and she also found out today she passed. Don't base it on the amount of questions you had. I know you passed and I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. I'll be waiting to hear how you did. Take care of yourself in the meantime. :)
