New Jersey City University (NJCU) Accelerated Nursing 2019

Published

Hi all!

I know it may be a bit early but I like to always get the ball rolling. Is there anyone that is looking to apply to the 2019-2020 accelerated nursing cohort at NJCU?? I'm looking to connect so we can keep each other updated throughout the process.

Guys, we are a week away from decisions. ? We may either be notified on the 15th or just going forwards. I hope it's wonderful news for several of us.

How are y'all keeping sane as we wait? I've been trying to soak up every moment with my two year old because I know if/when we start school (God willing) free time will be a thing of the past ?

I'm chillin. Honestly time is going by fast in my book because I feel like there are a lot of things to do otherwise and when decisions come, they come. So I've been focused on everything but. We all did our best and submitted and that's that. For me it helps to just know that getting in wont make or break me, so I'm just going on with life in meantime. Once decisions are shared, that's when I'll really know how to move. If I get in, awesome! I'll cry because it'll be God bc my application wasn't strongest but that's when I'll start crunching time in with people and doing as much as I can, that I want to do before the program. I'm really praying I get in though. If not, I'm waiting on other program decisions as well, but NJCU would be my #1 due to finances. I'm praying I can get loans, scholarships, grants, etc that will help. Cause I have $0 at the moment. And if I dont get in now, I'm confident I'm not going to give up that easily and just work on bettering myself for future applications.

In meantime, I'm working and just doing me and going about life.

Hey all, I have been looking for a thread for the NJCU cohort for 2019. I finally found it! I received the email in regards to when we should receive a final decision. April 15th cannot come SOON enough!!!! I am trying to be realistic, considering how competitive these programs are. I have been denied as well as wait-listed for other schools. I was accepted into Ramapo. Right now my back up is transferring into Ramapo's generic nursing program if I do not get into NJCU. I do prefer njcu because it is shorter, 12 months instead of 18-24 months at Ramapo. Wish you all best of luck!!!

I am a current student at the Jersey City campus (Class of 2019) and currently serve as the class Social Media Officer. If you have any questions about the program, feel free to PM me or post on here. I will get back to you as soon as I can.

EDIT: If you do not receive a decision on April 15, please be patient with the faculty/staff. Our cycle had almost 700 applications last year. Our cohort was about 55 people. That's a LOT to go over and process.

Remember, if you DO get accepted, you were CHOSEN. It's competitive, but the program is worth it. You WILL miss important events and make sacrifices, but you have to remember the end goal.

1. How safe is the campus?

2. Are classes held in one building or multiple?

3. What is the most difficult semester of the 4 in the ABSN?Which is the easiest?

1. The campus is pretty safe. Security is present in the parking lots as well as on campus. I've personally never had any incidents.

2. All classes are held in Rossey Hall. Some of them are hybrid.

3. There are three semesters. The hardest one is the second one (which I am currently in). It has been notoriously known as the "weed-out," consistent with the cohorts before us. However, in our current cohort, we lost three people after the first semester. According to Dr. Johnson (who is the chairperson of the ABSN program), NO one has failed the third semester.

EDIT: The second semester is particularly difficult due to the nature of the classes you take concurrently. Adult Health I + Pharmacology + Nursing Research + juggling clinicals = CHALLENGE

Hi! Thanks for answering some questions for us!

Are there any breaks during or between semesters? When was your official start date? Where/how far are clinicals from campus?

Really appreciate your feedback!

Anytime. I'm here to help.

The only breaks you will have are state holidays (shared mostly by the school), a 3 week Winter Break, a 1 week Spring Break, and a 1.5 week Pre-Summer Break after the second semester. Clinicals can be up to an hour and a half from campus. The most south that we have been placed so far is Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, NJ. All clinical sites are in New Jersey. Our official start date was September 1st.

How feasible do you think working is, while in the program. Do you know anyone that did both?

Working during the program is OFFICIALLY discouraged by the faculty. It is not an excuse for lateness, especially for clinical or classes. However, I know a handful of people who are still working part-time/per-diem on overnights as nursing assistants or medical scribes.

I still work as a licensed mental health clinician and psychotherapist per diem and I manage to pull As and Bs in my classes. Side note, you will have to become comfortable with getting Bs at times. lol.

That is good to know, especially hearing from someone that is actually in the program. I currently work full time, as well as per diem elsewhere, I plan to leave my full time job if I get into NJCU.

Thank you so much for posting here! After being accepted, how many days did you need to dedicate to school things? Did you have an interview, orientation, physical, etc? I work full-time so I’m wondering how many days I would need. Were you able to get financial aid and if so how much was given in federal aid without taking private loans? Lastly, is BLS certification required? I am only CPR/first aid certified and I know most schools require BLS and it usually states that on the website but don’t see it for NJCU. Thank you!

You're welcome!

I dedicated half my time to preparing for school after being accepted. Pretty much trying to get myself back into a scholastic mindset. There is no interview, but there IS a waiting list. Orientation was held in early July.

One thing to get done ASAP is to get your VACCINATIONS UP TO DATE. You will be VERY behind if you don't start early. Also, they won't let you into clinical sites without them. BLS certification is required!

With regards to financial aid, I somehow still had leftover money (even after undergrad and graduate school). About half your loans WILL be private loans, so choose a lender carefully.
