Hello everyone! New here at Allnurses. Hope all is well with everyone. Looking for some tips or help as I am about to begin my first school nursing job at a high school. Coming with nothing but NICU background. Any information will be greatly appreciated! Look forward to hearing from you! Thank you!

Welcome. Love when we get new hires. Welcome to the nurses' station. Don't forget to wear pink on Wednesdays unless you prefer concentrated pink (red).

You won't figure it out all at once, and when you do, you will then find a way that is easier!! The custodians are your friend!!! Forge an alliance with the front desk person as well!
I definitely won't forget! At least I'll know that other nurses across the country are wearing pink with me!
I will try my best to forge an alliance. Do either of you work prn at the hospital while working at the school full time?
I work Sat & Sun nights. My wife works the school Mon.
Is it exhausting? Manageable? I'm haven't decided what is best. My struggle is do I stay Prn at the hospital while I'm beginning as a full time school nurse.

Yes, stay on prn...it'll remind you why you'll want to stay with school nursing.
Long term care...It has been a hundred years since I worked in a hospital!
LOL! Maybe I should NOT stay PRN! Hahaha there must be a reason why I decided to look elsewhere.

Tell us a little more about your school...demographics? How many students? A lot will be determined by the population you have. The nurse who works at the middle and high school (I am in the elementary school) says most days she feels more like a social worker. We are at an inner-city Charter school.

I work in a PreK-12 school, so I do have high school aged kids, but we are well staffed with counselors and have involved admins, so I usually only see them for their health issues. Get a lot of tired kids who play sick to go home. Or they will text their parents all morning about how sick they are, until parent calls me to see if their kiddo is sick when I haven't even seen them! LOL lots of fun those teenagers!
As for working, I chose to only work PRN in the summer. I have 3 school aged kids, and their activities usually take up the bulk of my time off. And thats a big reason I took a school nurse job in the first place - to be able to attend all their things.
Welcome and good luck! Keep posting!
