New Here, with Question!

You all seem so friendly. It's so good to be here because I have no one to talk to about this.

I'm going to be 54 this month, will have an AA degree in Liberal Arts as of 6/03, and won't be able to start my nursing pre-reqs until fall of '03. Since I work FT, I'm only going to be able to take one course each semester. By the time I get ready to apply to nursing school (for just a 2-year degree), it's going to be 3 years from now, and I'll be 57. Which means I'll probably be 58 by the time I get into nursing school, IF I get into nursing school. And that's my question: is my age going to work against me? And, if it does, how much is it going to work against me? Should I just give up my dream of being a nurse? I don't want to put a lot of time/years into pre-reqs for nursing school if there's little or no chance I'll be able to get in.

Thanks.

Who were so good to send me public and personal replies, I am MOST grateful. You gave just the encouragement I needed. Thank you SO MUCH.

Bella :kiss LOL

Age is no barrier. Commitment and maturity always welcome. keep on!

it is not even a question if your heart is in it.

While there are some down sides I have experienced being older (body aches, memory retention, bladder oh yeah, that's pregnancy realted) the benefits far outweigh them.

I don't have the stress of a boyfriend, fiance.

I don't have the stress of "study or party" because my memory is not a keen as it once was, I'm always studying!

I have raised a family, and lived to tell. That my friend, prepares you more than you know.

And the top reason it's better when your older.......

you can park in the staff lot and no one gives you a second glance!!!!

Have fun with this, and keep looking forward toward your goal.

The other students are going to LOVE you!!!

No matter what happens in 5 or 6 years you'll be 5 or 6 years older, so do what you want.

Also, we have found that the more mature new grads are far more receptive and able to deal with the challeneges of being a new nurse.

Isn't it great that there are some times when being a bit older is a benefit?

And there's nothing like being around younger adults to make you think and feel younger.

You go girl!

Hey~

When I graduated, our oldest was a 58 y/o lady, and she was an Honor Student!

Her and her daughter went through nursing school together, which I think was really cool....

I miss talking to her....she's a lovely lady.

Good Luck to you in school! I'm sure you are going to be fantastic!
