New Grads - Share your success at getting your 1st Job

Published

With so many posts about people having a hard time finding a job as a new grad. I think it would be great to learn from students who have been recently successful and share some of their tips.

I have been looking for about a week now. Everything that IS out there wants at least a year experience!! :sniff:

I was fortunate enough to get a job on a med/surgical floor. Took my boards in July and started my new job in August. I think what landed the job for me was the nurses aid job I took after my first yr through nursing school. I oriented with 3 other new grads, and so far so good

I graduated from nursing school in May of 2009 and passed my boards in August 2009. I got my first RN job in Feb. of 2010. And unfortunately I have recently relocated and had to quit that job. Even with 5 months experience as an RN no one wants to touch me at the hospitals. I've been applying for jobs for the last 3 months with not a single call back.

Let me also add that I had spoken to the nurse manager on the Pediatric floor that I did my leadership on. I was told to fill out the application and she would take care of it and get me a job on the floor. When I called about it after my leadership term was over the nurse manager didn't care to speak to me. You can't take anyone's word for anything anymore.

i graduated in dec 09 and started my first job on a tele floor 2 weeks later...the only job i actually applied to and interviewed for. this was the same floor where i spent my last semester of nursing school doing clinicals. i had the job offer before i even graduated. i cannot stress the importance of of networking...talking to nurses and nurse managers especially on the floor where you spend your last semester of nursing. talk to your instructors...they know people on the floor, managers, as well as people in key positions.

Specializes in ED, ICU.

Network, network, network...

Specializes in LTC.

Well, I just finished the first half of my nursing school and took my PN boards in July. Got the results on a Friday-passed!! So Monday morning I went into one of our LTC facilities here. I filled out an app, told her a little about myself, and she aid when can you start? I was on the floor the next day!! It is crazy and so different from nursing school but I am slowly getting the hang of things..

Specializes in Ortho and Tele med/surg.

To make it short and simple: I moved out of state! I relocated to Texas and found a job quickly.

Specializes in NeuroICU/SICU/MICU.

I was lucky enough to have signed a contract with a local hospital to have my tuition paid during school. They hired everyone they sponsored for a BSN as far as I know, I suppose in order to get a return on their $17k investment. They also required an interview, which apparently never happened before this year. I interviewed well, and was hired into my first choice (ICU stepdown/tele).

I graduated in may and had a job lined up on a med surg floor. I was told that nursing recruiters want to hear from you about a year out, make contact, try to get a job as a pct (Nurses assisstant). the only people who got jobs in my class were the ones already working for the hospital. have a great resume. if you can't get a job as an assistant. be a server, they like that too. Network with your teachers and nurses in the clinical setting and use one as a reference and have around 3 teachers write letters of rec.

"be a server"

Do you mean a waiter or waitress?

Isn't that interesting.

Started applying via internet and fax 2 weeks before graduation...had three job interviews and two job offers within those two weeks, started work before I passed my boards. I feel very fortunate, and remind myself daily how lucky I am to have a job.
