New Grads - where is there a nursing glut?

Nurses New Nurse

Hello,

I just wanted to ask those of you in the midst of job hunting whether you believe your area has a nursing shortage (meaning that new grads find hospital jobs easily) or a nursing glut area (new grads are struggling to get hospital or any jobs). Please name the area/state as some of us from nursing glut areas may be considering relocation. Thank you.

I live in pittsburgh pa and most of my friends that have applied for jobs have gotten them. I wanted to work in long term care and I got called back to every job I applied for.

Come to Georgia

The local hospital just past the old farm on the right...she's got 8 beds in the ER...they're fixin' to make it bigger I tell ya!

Bigger meaning 34 Million dollars are being spent to add on some 16,000 sq ft, new ER and a helicopter pad. Houses are going up allover.

25 miles due north is a regional facility which is spending in excess of 60 million...new ICU, heart center...spent 10 million on a robot to perform cardiac surgery. Not bad for country folk. :)

My hospital offers a $500 incentive to employees for refering a nurse who accepts a job and remains employed with the facility for 6 months.

I receive recruitment email every week for RN-Intern positions in Atlanta.

I moved from the tri-state area...lived in the Republic of New Jersey which IMOP was not too unlike Nazi Germany. Getting a paramedic position requires a political appointment and the cost of living and traffic is comparable to LA. I lived in what was considered a shack by Jersey standards on 1/10th of an acre and was paying almost $7000 a year in taxes...and this was not a great area. So I sold my little mini-mansion in the burbs and headed south...

Out here in Georgia I bought me a little place in the country...hear me y'all? 4 bedroom 3 bath, master suite, deck, porch, 2 car gargage, .75 acres for $125k. My taxes are $900 per year. I am exactly 6 miles from the hospital. In the country but within 25 miles of anything I could want or need...Walmart is 5 miles away and I hear we're getting a Super Walmart and Long Horn's Streak House in a year!

Georgia pays for my education and appreciates nurses. I'd say get here before everyone figures out this is the next "place to be"

My 2 cents...:twocents:

I know this may seem a silly question, but when one says a "graduate nursing student," are they referring to a student that has graduated from an ADN program, or a Master's degree in nursing?

i think it mostly refers to students who have graduated but have not been licensed

I live in plam beach florida, there is no glut at all down here, in fact they even hire you as graduate nurse before you take your boards.

there is a shortage of nursing schools in my area, thus making the wait list to enter the program 1-2 years.

2bnurse-1,

thinking of relocating to palm beach florida....just visited there for a few days and loved it. can you recommend some good hospitals for me to apply to, and also can you recommend a good area to rent. (want to rent first before buying). appreciate any tips and info. thanks.

ps curious...what is the starting rate for new grads and nurses with a year experience.

Just in case 2bnurse-1 doesn't see this I think I can answer this for you. I lived/grew up in Palm Beach County and moved from there 6 yrs ago.

The cost of living has increased dramatically in Florida, esp with housing though I hear it's starting to come back down. As for where to consider living. Wellington (Western Palm Beach County area), Jupiter, and Boca Raton are all really nice areas but they are more expensive. Some areas of West Palmn (esp the "downtown" City Place area), western areas of Boynton Beach, and Lake Worth.

As for hospitals... wow there are so many to choose from. Here's a link that lists most of them... I know there is more than what this link has.

I am not sure what the starting pay is there but I think its about $20 for a GN.

I have to tell you this though... living there is VERY different from visiting. It's crowded, crime rates have risen a lot, and the schools are not good. It isn't what it used to be. :sniff:

I have heard that the Pittsburgh area is quite oversaturated with new grads, although I don't live there so I don't have any personal experience.

I'm a new grad in Pittsburgh, and I think that it depends what area you want to go into. New grads will always be able to find work in med-surg, and even critical care here in Pittsburgh. But if you want to work a harder to get into specialty such as peds or OB, then you have to start doing leg work long before graduation.

My friend works at Delray Medical Center (ICU Stepdown) she gets payed $34, she only has 6 months experience.

Delray is a trauma facility but i'v heard and she also told me the only department that is organized and operated fairly is the ICU all other units are a nightmare.

stay away from St.Mary's Medical Center in West Palm Beach!

but jump for the opportunity to work at Good Sam on Flagger next to the ocean. its a upscale facilty and caters to high end patients. i love that place!

Palms West--smaller hospital but well managed

Bethesda Memorial--so so

you should take a travel assignment-take advantage of the free housing.

best cities to live in Boca Raton rent is $900 (1/1)

Delray Beach $850 (1/1)

Boynton Beach $800 (1/1)

(of course you could find something a little less, but these rates would put you in a nice decent, safe community)

i personally dont/would'nt live in the West Palm Beach area-(the crime rate is too high)

As someone who currently lives in NJ, I appreciate your kind invite! But I plan to become an NP, and I hear that GA isn't the greatest place for NPs to practice. :( Still, $125K for a house. Hmmm.....

Im a newly graduated nurse who has been an lpn for 18 years, thought it would be a piece of cake to get a job, WRONG!! I have never had so much trouble trying to find a job. It is very disheartening. Everyone wants expereinced nurses and I can truly understand that, but the age old question is how do you get the experience if no one will give you a chance. So I keep plugging along applying and working as an lpn. Seems strange to wonder if I will be out of work when I pass boards.

I see you're from Florida -- whereabouts are you looking for work?
